Looking for a job where you can serve a higher purpose while utilizing your culinary skills in a beautiful mountain oasis? Menla is the place for you. We are a 115-bed retreat center in the heart of the Catskill mountains. Surrounded by nature, the Menla kitchen serves three meals a day to our retreat guests. We aim to use as much organic, health-focused food to feed all of our participants and staff. The kitchen is a fast-paced, fun environment open to creative types who really care about food, healthy living and customer service.
The Kitchen is the heart and hearth of Menla. Although our kitchen staff works hard in a very busy environment, they also have a lot of fun. With just a handful of employees preparing three meals a day for 30-100 people, it is crucial that the kitchen staff be team players who are dependable and reliable and can maintain a positive attitude. Throughout most of the season, there is a morning shift and an afternoon/evening shift, with both shifts’ hours varying slightly according to the needs of each specific event. Although occasionally we prepare fish or chicken, our food is mostly gourmet vegetarian—much of which is organic and some of which comes from our own organic garden!
Cooking at Menla is a unique experience. It can be exciting, challenging, and truly rewarding. The Cooks work closely with our Chef to execute the menu and ensure an all around good dining experience for our guests. They check in with guests and address individual dietary needs as they arise.
The Dishwashers set up and break down the buffet, bus dirty dishes, clean and put them away, and help with prep work whenever possible.
During your downtime, enjoy hiking, yoga, meditation, lounging by the pool, or just relax with your fellow coworkers in employee housing. This position includes housing in our modest but comfortable staff housing. Employees will be housed in single rooms with shared common spaces (bathroom, living room, kitchen) All rooms come fully furnished and Menla is happy to provide any furnishing that may make you more comfortable (within reason). Our staff is truly supportive of one another both on an off the clock. Whether it be dining together during our complimentary shift meal or getting together for staff classes to further discuss different works about buddhism, we try to cultivate a culture of care, understanding, compassion and love.
