McCarthy River Tours & Outfitters (MRTO), the leader in high end Single & Multi Day Raft Trips and Glacier Hiking in Wrangell St. Elias National Park, is seeking Multi Day Raft Guides.

Founded in 2010, McCarthy River Tours & Outfitters offers small group size Multi Day River Expeditions from 2 to 14+ days through Class II to Class V whitewater & Private Day Rafting, Glacial Lake Kayak Tours & Day Glacier Hikes on the Root & Kennicott Glaciers.  We emphasize the guest experience by focusing on Safety, High Quality, Authenticity & Exceptional Customer Service.

Multi Day Guide Job Description

Multi Day Guide is one of the most important roles at McCarthy River Tours.  You set an example for younger guides as well as serve as the primary source of interaction with our Multi Day Rafting Guests. As a Multi Day guide, you are responsible for ensuring quality, safety and an excellent guest experience on our Multi Day trips.  

You are expected to act in a professional manner at all times as well as keep accurate notes and data to be reported post trip. The best Multi Day Guides are skilled in all facets of back-country travel, you must possess a minimum of a WFR (Wilderness First Responder) as well as Swift Water Rescue certification. On top of this, you are an entertainer and story teller for guests as well as backcountry chef of all meals. In the backcountry, you are the one that makes the wheels turn on our trips.

Role Responsibility and Expectations

  • Review pre trip paperwork with Operations Manager and Senior Guide
  • Lead pre trip interactions with Guests (Pre Trip Meeting, Hotel Shuttles)
  • Cooking and Preparing high quality backcountry meals
  • Attention to detail with an emphasis on guest experience
  • Lead pre trip briefing with guests
  • Organize and complete rig/derig
  • Possess an advanced knowledge of the river, geography, geology and the local Flora and Fauna
  • You set the vibe on our multi day trips, you must be ready to lead and direct on your best and worst days and with co-workers from various backgrounds and experiences.
  • Set and maintain the company culture and guide morale among the multi day staff throughout the working season.
  • Facilitate the gathering and loading of all guide trip photos/video to google drive folder.


  • Essential
    • Minimum of 3 years Multi Day Rafting and Backcountry experience
    • Possess a great attention to detail, logistics guru, big picture seer and planner.
    • Ability to read and navigate Class III rivers
    • Swiftwater Rescue, CPR/AED & Wilderness First Responder Certifications (can be completed post hire)
    • Valid United States state issued Driver's License
    • Minimum of 2 years Commercial River Guiding Experience
    • Excellent Communication Skills
    • A Can Do Attitude -  Willingness to work in various tasks across a growing company.
  • Preferable
    • Alaska Rafting Experience
    • Previous Multi Day Commercial River guiding experience

About Our Guests

Our clientele consists primarily of Independent Travelers and Small Group Van Tour Affiliates with the occasional large group tour and Cruise Ship Passenger.  Our guests travel from all over the world, mainly from within Alaska, the contiguous United States, China, Europe & Israel and are drawn to Alaska wilderness & America’s largest National Park.
