Fire Island National Seashore, NY... Work, beach and NYC
Join our team on the pristine Atlantic Ocean beaches of Fire Island National Seashore high dune wilderness, serviced by ferry only. We are the authorized concessioners of the NPS operating at two locations Watch Hill & Sailors Haven: 2 marinas, 2 general stores, 2 food and beverage outlets and a family campground with glamping.
FINS is a 26 mile long barrier island along Long Island to the east of NYC that features pristine high dune wilderness beaches, summer communities and the globally rare Sunken Forest. Water is warm enough to swim/surf all summer.
About Love Watch Hill & Sailors Haven Inc
After taking over the contract in 2018, we are excited to build Watch Hill & Sailors Haven into premier National Park destinations for visitors and need a committed team to make it happen.
We are particularly interested in team players looking to be a part of our trajectory over the long term who can help us build outstanding kitchens, delicious and consistent food by returning year after year. Part of the plan is to source much of our produce from farms on the East End of Long Island, the rest is you, the talent.
When you're not working... Indulge in a Coastal Kaleidoscope! Immerse yourself in an enchanting collage of coastal life and history. Rhythmic waves, high dunes, ancient maritime forests, historic landmarks and glimpses of wildlife, Fire Island has been a special place for diverse plants, animals and people for centuries. Far from the pressure of nearby big-city life (but only a 90-minute train ride), dynamic barrier island beaches offer both solitude and camaraderie, and spiritual renewal (source: FINS).
The Employee Experience
The work environment is fun and busy on the weekends, with live music and crowds of boaters and day-trippers who visit by ferry for a day at the beach. Given that we are serviced by ferries there can be busy rushes of patrons when ferries depart. There is always something to do even when it is quiet. Watch Hill is the larger of the two facilities and can have up to 40 employees during peak summer operations. Sailors Haven has up to about 10 employees. Both locations are connected by water taxi to summer communities to the west, Cherry Grove, The Pines, Ocean Bay Park, Ocean Beach, Fair Harbor, Saltaire and Kismet. Ferry terminals on the mainland are the vibrant coastal communities of Sayville and Patchogue, Patchogue having a nightlife and music scene. Both have LIRR train service to NYC (about 90 minutes) which allow staff to explore and experience NYC on days off without spending like a tourist. The Hamptons and Montauk Point are about an hour to the east by LIRR as well.
Employee housing is literally behind the primary dunes of the lifeguarded Atlantic Ocean beaches. You can swim every day and Long Island water is warm enough to swim all summer and most of the operating season without a wetsuit. Sailors Haven has had a really good surf break the last few years should there be any surfers interested.
During your time off you can swim and explore. Both facilities have NPS visitor centers with interpretive rangers and volunteer opportunities. Watch Hill neighbors 7 miles of high dune wilderness and has miles of boardwalk nature trails to walk or jog. Sailors Haven has the globally rare ancient maritime forest called the Sunken Forest with boardwalk trail loops. FINS itself has many natural and cultural resources from wildlife to the Fire Island Light House to the William Floyd Estate (signer of the Declaration of Independence). Wildlife had been robust with whale sightings off the beaches.
We value hard-working team-player employees that will get the job done and always treat park visitors with a friendly smile no matter the situation. We need and expect employees to be flexible and jump in to perform any task asked which can sometimes mean dishwashing. Weekdays tend to be quiet, a time to catch up and prep from and for the weekends. Your days off will generally be weekdays.
Ideal candidates are happy, energetic, engaged and passionate about the park and of course, love the beach. Flexible team players who can work when and where needed are vital. We also cherish employees who anticipate what needs to be done whether it's picking up a piece of litter when walking by or busing a table in someone else's section because they notice and are headed back to the kitchen.
Ideal candidates also can commit to full seasons of employment. At a minimum, we need staff from mid-June through Labor Day but some positions require the full operating season and then some (Mid May through Mid October).
We are unable to sponsor H2B visas.
Room and Board
Employee housing is provided to vital staff at no charge in beach houses on the ocean behind the primary dunes. There is a housing deposit. At Watch Hill, we usually have two staff houses that have four bedrooms and two baths. At Sailors Haven, we usually have a two bedroom apartment on the ocean behind the primary dune. For COVID mitigation, we have reduced occupancy for the houses.
Given the remote location (serviced by ferry) employees get comp'd 100% for most food menu items for their shift meal and tap soft drinks. Employees receive 25% off (or items at cost in cases where discount would make price less than cost) of general store and, when not on shift, 25% off non-alcoholic menu items. We offer a 10% family and friend discount to folks employees bring and dine with.
We also supplement employee travel via our workboat when needed.
We have a lot of programming from live music to wildlife presentations and the NPS offers guided nature and canoe tours.
Neighboring summer communities on the seashore offer nightlife, dining, and shopping.
Getting Here and Getting Around
FINS is serviced by ferry or private boat only. There is free parking at the Patchogue Watch Hill Ferry Terminal in Patchogue. Employees coming from out of state can park their car there all season for free. The ferry terminal is a short walk (diagonally across the street) from the LIRR train station that connects to NYC (Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan), JFK Airport, the Hamptons and Montauk Point.
For fun, staff can walk over the dune to the lifeguarded Atlantic Ocean beach or head to NYC. The water is warm enough to swim and surf most of the operating season. There is a decent surf break at Sailors Haven (though the sand bar and break conditions can change seasonally due to the dynamic nature of our sandy seashore.) We offer live music and other programming at our facilities.
You can hike and jog in the miles of boardwalk nature trails, into wilderness areas, along with the beach and to neighboring seashore communities that offer shopping, dining, and nightlife... Or you can take a water taxi to them.
