The Rafting/Hiking Guide position at Drifters Lodge is a dream job for someone who loves the outdoors, people, and physically challenging work. Our rafting/hiking guides spend many hours on the river and trails each week, providing a safe, entertaining experience for families and tourists to see the incredible sights of Cooper Landing, the Chugach National Forest, and the Kenai Wildlife Refuge.

Requirements:

  • Must be 21 years old with a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
  • Must be physically strong enough to safely row an inflatable raft with up to 10 people or 1800 lbs through cold fast water and maneuver around rocks, trees, debris, and other boats
  • Must have current CPR and First Aid Certifications
  • Must be able to work up to 10 hours a day outdoors in the elements: heat, direct sun, rain, cold, or windy conditions.
  • Must have enthusiasm for the outdoors, enjoy people, and be self-motivated

Job Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Must obtain a guide license from the State of Alaska. Adhere to and uphold all State and Federal laws and regulations regarding water and land use.
  • Wear an approved life jacket at all times when on the river, and ensure every client wears a life jacket at all times when on the river.
  • Learn and adhere to Drifters Lodge safety protocols, including use of emergency equipment.
  • Guide up to three 3-hour rafting trips per day on the Upper Kenai River, with up to 9 hours spent on the water with clients and 10-12 total hours of work/day when fully booked.
  • Guide small groups of 2-6 people on local hikes. Must become familiar with all approved trails. Trails may be 2-8 miles long, some with strenuous elevation gains. Safety, education, and respectful/responsible enjoyment of the outdoors are key
  • Learn and expand your knowledge of native wildlife, trees, plants, flowers, and mushrooms in our area. Learn the history of the area and interesting stories related to the locations being used. Share this information with guests
  • Entertain groups of diverse people for extended periods of time by engaging in conversation, teaching, and listening. Must maintain an upbeat and agreeable attitude while taking care of clients.
  • Greet customers as they arrive for their trips, and show them the restroom & where to wait.
  • Outfit rafters in rain gear, boots, and life jackets before each trip.
  • Clean rafts and passenger vans daily.
  • Maintain rafting gear in good working order by checking boots for holes, raingear for wear and tear, and life jackets for safety. Make repairs as needed. Will be responsible for making sure all gear is clearly labeled as Drifters property and is returned and accounted for daily.
  • Clean and organize the rafting room daily by sweeping, putting away gear, and washing boots and rain gear as needed.
  • Inspect the rafting staircase to ensure it is safe for rafters to descend. Make accommodations for rafters with physical limitations by assisting them downstairs, into the raft, or by starting the trip at a boat launch instead of at the staircase.
  • When needed, call rafting groups to set up trip logistics. Transport clients as needed to and from Drifters Lodge from nearby locations before and after their trip.
  • Work directly under a supervisor, and be courteous and respectful to coworkers at all times.
  • Perform crossover duties as assigned by a supervisor such as airport pickups and drop-offs, shuttle driving, landscaping, housekeeping, food preparation, and office coverage. During busy times, rafting guides will often be utilized for client transportation shifts (driving clients to and from their fishing trips and other activities)
