We are currently hiring for the Summer Camp 2022 season at Hidden Villa — a beautiful and unique farm and wilderness location — sleeping under the stars and engaging with a diverse group of campers and coworkers. 

  • Summer Camp Nurse/Healthcare Manager

    Summer Camp

    Position Title: Healthcare Manager/Nurse

    Reports To: Camp Directors

    Exempt/Non-Exempt: Exempt

    Position Summary

    Healthcare Manager for camp; supervise health and cleanliness standards; work with camp director and staff; and help provide adequate physical health conditions for all.

    Specific Responsibilities

    • Ensure that each staff member and camper has on file a health history form as required.
    • Lead specific areas of staff training pertaining to camp health and safety and the use of universal precautions for infection control.
    • Conduct health screening & medication check-in for arriving campers & staff, as well as health screening for trips out of camp.
    • Conduct an inventory of supplies and place orders when necessary, ensuring timely arrival of supplies.
    • Establish and follow appropriate medical routines including record keeping in the daily medical log, disposal of medical waste, managing and safeguarding medications, and utilizing approved First Aid Treatment procedures.
    • Coordinate coverage of the health hut.
    • Coordinate communication between health hut and camp office.
    • Check, re-stock and issue first-aid kits.
    • Prepare a summary and evaluation of the camp season including inventories, camper reports on health problems, and make recommendations for the following season.
    • Monitor health of all staff and ensure proper staff health record keeping.
    • Monitor/evaluate camp procedures, facilities, and conditions and suggest modifications that would create more healthful conditions in the camp.
    • Ability to be onsite daily to review camp health practices and consult with/provide advice for other camp staff regarding any medical concerns.
    • Serve as a member of the all camp management team.
    • These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required.

    Essential Functions

    • Ability to drive to doctor or emergency treatment locations.
    • Must be able to get to remote locations on Hidden Villa property.
    • Read and understand prescriptions, health forms and standing orders.
    • Ability to observe and assess unsanitary or unhealthy conditions of camp.

    Desired qualifications

    • CA Licensed as a RN or LVN; will consider EMT certified
    • Current CPR, First Aid, and CA Food Handler certifications 
    • Experience with children and young adults
    • Ability to work well with peers in a team environment
    • Ability to work with little supervision
    • Ability to assist in emergency situation (fire, evacuation, illness or injury)
    • Ability to originate, update and monitor health care, maintain records, and implement health care plan
    • Desire to work in a camp community
    • Valid Driver’s License and clean driving record (no major infractions) strongly preferred.

  • Summer Camp Ropes Instructor

    Position Title:  Ropes Activity Specialist 

    Reports to: Camp Directors

    Exempt/Non-Exempt: Exempt 

    Position Summary

    Ropes Activity Specialists will facilitate the use of our low and high rope elements. Specialists will also coordinate the use and distribution of supplies and materials for these spaces, including inventory, care, and cleaning. Additionally they will train staff and campers on the safe operation and use of all equipment and supplies according to ACA best practices.

    Essential Functions

    Ability to communicate and work with groups of all ages and skills levels participating, and provide necessary instruction and communication of safety procedures to staff and campers.
    - Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
    - Cognitive and communication abilities to plan and implement activities to achieve camper development objectives.
    - Live on site.

    Desired Qualifications

    - Documented experience with High and Low ropes course; belay experience required

    -  Ability to train staff on challenge course operation as well as animal safety protocols

    - Ability to maintain records and necessary administrative tasks as they relate to the equipment

    - Ability to work well with peers in a team environment with little supervision

    - Desire and ability to work with youth in an outdoor setting

    - Current First Aid and CPR certifications preferred

    - Valid Driver’s License and clean driving record (no major infractions) required

    - At least 18 years of age

    Responsibilities

    - Continuously provide programming in your assigned space that relates to Hidden Villa Summer Camp’s mission.
    - Ensure that all American Camp Association regulations concerning program area are adhered to, including supervision ratios.

    - Write up activities and keep them in the Activities Specialist Google Drive.
    - Submit a written report at the conclusion of the summer evaluating the current season and making suggestions for the following season.

  • Summer Camp Unit Leader

    Position Title: Camp Unit Leader 

    Reports to: Assistant Camp Director, Camp Director

    Position Summary

    Responsible under the supervision of the Assistant Camp Director for managing the camper cohorts which includes supervising counselor staff and all campers in that program. Unit Leaders also serve as part of the all camp leadership  team and are responsible for modeling a high level of professionalism.

    Essential Functions

    • Ability to train and supervise staff and assess ability and skill levels appropriate to lead activities.
    • Abilities to observe camper and staff behavior, assess appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.

    Responsibilities

    • Be an active leader in all staff training.
    • Supervise all staff in your unit and the overall operation of your program.
    • Ensure that all ACA regulations concerning program area are adhered to, including supervision ratios.
    • Oversee scheduling of activities for each camp session and ensure sufficient staffing for each time block.
    • Coordinate time off for staff in your camp.
    • Ensure the health, safety and well-being of all campers and staff in your program.
    • Model enthusiastic and positive participation in program and with youth.
    • Provide regular feedback to staff and encourage a growth minded culture. Conduct written and oral evaluations of staff midsummer and at the end of summer.
    • Communicate clearly and effectively with parents/guardians as needed.
    • Work with Assistant Camp Director and camp admissions staff to ensure a smooth and safe camper check-in and check-out process.
    • Sleep on-site in assigned living space.
    • Produce a written report at the end of the summer.

  • Summer Camp Residential Counselor

    Position Title: Residential Counselor 

    Reports to: Unit Leader

    Position Summary

    Under the supervision of the Unit Leader, Residential Counselors work collaboratively to implement their residential program and create positive learning opportunities that support Hidden Villa’s Mission. The Residential program is comprised of three grade cohorts, 4th to 7th  grade, 8th to 10th grade and 10th to 12th grade. Residential Counselors are hired to work in a particular cohort for the duration of the summer. There may be occasions when you are asked to work with a different cohort as needed.

    Responsibilities

    • Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all campers in your group.
    • Be a role model for each camper in your group.
    • Design and teach/co-teach age-appropriate activities to groups of campers.
    • Collaborate on leading and co-leading morning reflections and evening activities.
    • Work with your Head Counselor/Unit Leader when there are camper adjustment or discipline problems.
    • Recognize and respond to opportunities for discussion of individual or group problems or concerns.
    • Provide opportunities for the group so that each individual experiences success during camp.
    • Sleep on-site in your assigned program area when camp is in session.
    • Participate in scheduling for your program prior to the start of each new session.
    • Follow the schedule for your program as written by Head Counselors and Unit Leaders.
    • Monitor and interact with campers during meals and all unstructured time.
    • Be available in sleeping area at night to support campers.

    Essential Functions

    • Ability to accept supervision and guidance and implement changes
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Current CPR, First Aid, and CA Food Handler certifications; or willing to obtain
    • Ability to teach and/or lead activities related to our camp mission
    • Ability to mentor Youth Leadership campers

  • Summer Camp Lifeguard

    Position Title: Camp Lifeguard

    Reports to: Youth Development Manager

    Exempt/ Non-Exempt: Non-Exempt

    Full-Time/Part-Time:  Seasonal

    Position Summary

    Lifeguard for all programs that swim. Conduct pool orientation and swim checks at the beginning of each session.. Maintain a safe, healthy pool environment for all to enjoy.

    Responsibilities

    1. Assist with pool orientation and ‘swim check’ for each age group at the beginning of each session and at the beginning of the summer for the staff training and maintain records regarding these checks.
    2. Ensure that all ACA regulations concerning the pool are adhered to, including pool supervision ratios.
    3. Assume the responsibility for the safety and well-being of all campers while at the pool.
    4. Be familiar with and prepared to implement emergency procedures.
    5. Ensure that the pool is properly closed and all entrances are locked when the pool is not in use.
    6. Observe counseling staff during pool activities and provide verbal feedback.
    7. Inventory the pool equipment. Coordinate the ordering of any needed supplies and ensure their timely arrival.
    8. Communicate pool maintenance and conditions to Maintenance Assistant and Management as appropriate.
    9. Submit a written report at the conclusion of the summer evaluating the current season and making suggestions for the following season.

    Desired Experience/ Qualifications

    Essential Functions

    1. Ability to communicate safety regulations and pool procedures to campers and staff.
    2. Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
    3. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to emergency situations within the pool area.
    4. Physical strength to perform rescues from the pool, and respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid.

    Desired Qualifications

    ● Current Lifeguard Certificate with Current CPR & First Aid
    ● Experience working as a lifeguard
    ● CA State Food Handler certification; or willing to obtain
    ● At least 18 years of age

  • Animal Husbandry Internship

    Hidden Villa is a nonprofit educational organization with a mission is “We foster educational experiences that build connections and inspire a deeper appreciation and respect for nature, food, and one another.” The Residential Internship Program is contributing to the next generation of green educators, innovative farmers, and thoughtful nonprofit leaders.

    Hidden Villa stretches over 1,600 acres of open space in the foothills of the Eastern Santa Cruz Mountains, about 40 miles south of San Francisco. We are seeking an energetic, responsible team player to fill our Animal Husbandry Internship position. The internship runs from April 4, 2022 until January 31, 2023. 

     

    Responsibilities

    The general responsibility of the Animal Husbandry Intern is to work under the supervision of the Animal Husbandry Management team. The intern will learn through participation in all aspects of livestock management - breeding, nutritional management, health maintenance, facilities maintenance, slaughter, processing, and direct market sales. There will be ample opportunity to participate in special projects outlined by the Animal Husbandry Management team, including refining animal management systems, infrastructure upgrades, the development of new products, and cross-departmental collaboration related to Hidden Villa’s four areas of focus: climate mitigation, healthy food systems, place-based outdoor education for all, and an antiracist and just society for all.

    Working Hours: Wednesday through Sunday 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM with a lunch break in the middle and possibly some extended hours. 

     

    SKILL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES

    • Gain practical production experience in a regenerative, multi-species grazing system
    • Participate in all aspects of livestock care and daily chores: feeding, milking, cleaning, breeding, etc.
    • Learn animal handling skills, including basic veterinary care, herding, and loading animals
    • Gain experience operating a tractor using various implements, including forks, bucket, and compost spreader
    • Assist with meat and egg sales, including packing orders, tracking and updating inventory, and communicating with customers
    • Perform basic ranch maintenance tasks and repairs including plumbing for animal watering systems, vehicle and equipment maintenance, fence repairs, and simple construction
    • Assist with farm record keeping, including tracking feed inputs and calculating feed conversion
    • Participate in on-farm slaughter and butchery of chickens, goats, sheep, and pigs
    • Support strategic initiative work related to food systems and agricultural literacy
    • Build understanding of food system from the lens of a non-profit partner  
    • May perform other duties as needed and/or assigned

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Candidates must be at least 18 years of age with the ability to work outside performing manual labor and lift at minimum of 50 pounds. Valid driver's license and clean driving record (no major infractions). Documentation establishing your right to work in the United States is required along with submission of fingerprints and the subsequent successful background check. 

     

    QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED 

    We desire a candidate with basic knowledge of/experience with sustainable agriculture and farm production/management.  Candidates must be self-starters with the ability to work independently, outdoors, and in physically demanding situations.  A basic understanding of construction, power-tool usage, and utilities (water/electric) is preferred. Experiential teaching experience and the ability to work with a diverse group of children and adults is also desired.

  • Trip Leader

    The Head Backpacking Trip Leader is responsible for the successful preparation and completion of  Hidden Villa’s backpacking program, Bay to Sea. With the support of the Co-Trip Leader, this position will  guide High School age youth with varying levels of backpacking experience, on three trips over the  summer while creating a fun and educational experience that supports Hidden Villa’s mission. 

    Specific Responsibilities 

    1. Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all participants. Act as a First Responder in emergency  situations. 

    2. Management of risk for social, emotional and physical factors that occur and shape experience for  optimum learning and growth.  

    3. Plan lessons for first-time backpackers: including trail health and safety, equipment use, meal  planning, etc. 

    4. Collaborate with CoTrip Leader on the menu in cooperation with the Food Service Manager, order and  purchase food. 

    5. Create a fun, safe and exciting camp experience for teens in your charge 

    6. Incorporate the Hidden Villa Mission in daily activities in camp and on the trail.  7. Build a cohesive team and role model collaborative teamwork for campers.  

    8. Address and document when there are camper adjustment or discipline problems 

    9. Demonstrate excellent ethics and respect for the Regional, State & National Park system and its  workers. 

    10. Ensure that all ACA regulations concerning programs are adhered to, including supervision ratios.  11. Provide opportunities for the group so that each individual experiences success during camp.

    12. These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned and others assigned  as required 

    Essential Functions 

    1. Ability to communicate and work with teens and staff in your program and provide necessary  instruction. 

    2. Abilities to observe camper behavior, assess appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations  and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques. 

    3. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards in camp and  on course. 

    4. Physical strength required to lead an 10-day backpacking trip carrying a minimum of 70 lbs and  respond appropriately to emergency situations. 

    Desired Qualifications 

    ● Possess the stamina and energy to safely lead others through difficult terrain, challenging weather  and long days 

    ● Ability to work independently, with little guidance, for planning and preparation of the trip 

    ● Current CA Food Handler, WFR and CPR certifications 

    ● Valid Driver’s License and clean driving record (no major infractions) strongly preferred.  

    ● Experience leading backpacking trips on and off trail for ten days or longer 

    ● Experience meal planning for backpacking trips, ten days or longer 

    ● Ability and experience working with high school age youth  

    ● Ability to evaluate camper performance, minimize risk and give and receive feedback to a diverse  staff and teen campers 

    ● Mastery of backpacking equipment and camp craft, including MSR Whisperlite stoves and water  purification technique. 

    ● Ability to navigate with map and compass on and off trail through a variety of terrain and  environmental conditions. 

    ● Knowledge of natural history and low-impact philosophy 

    ● Enjoy and feel comfortable in remote settings and be in camp community with little privacy 

    ● Excellent communication skills and ability to exercise sound judgment in decision making.

     ● Manage self-care and energy appropriately in the backcountry for extended periods. 

    ● At least 21 years of age
