The Harvest Grill at James Ranch is the ultimate farm-to-table restaurant featuring the products that are harvested on the ranch and sourced locally. Located right on the ranch, our guests eat alfresco overlooking our pastures where our dairy cows graze and chickens forage. Our goal is for our customers to have an excellent food experience and our employees have fun!
Durango is located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains with all the outdoor activities that you could want from a mountain town (i.e. world class mountain biking, cycling, hiking and river rafting).
About Harvest Grill at James Ranch
We, Cynthia & Robert, the owners of the Harvest Grill at James Ranch, are committed to providing both guests and employees with a unique food experience. With no prior experience in the restaurant industry, over the last seven years we have built our restaurant, as well as our reputation, on the foundation of honest hard work, showcasing the organic ingredients produced on the James Ranch and supporting our local farmers. It is important to us that we hire people that are passionate about being a part of the slow food movement as well as working with quality ingredients.
The James Ranch (www.jamesranch.net) has been in the James family for over 50 years. David James, the father of Cynthia, is one of the first ranchers in the area to understand the nutritional value of grass-fed only beef as well as its overall regenerative importance to the land. Raising five children on the land with Kay, his wife, they welcomed their children back once they experienced life outside of Durango and away from the ranch. Today, all five children live in Durango and four of them have established their separate enterprises on the ranch. The Harvest Grill is the last enterprise to join the beef, cheese, gardens and egg businesses, synergistically bringing all the families’ products together and creating the ultimate farm-to-table experience.
Every year we grow more and see the demand for quality ingredient dining. Because of this growth, we are investing in a new kitchen/restaurant that will be open year-round. We will continue to serve food based on seasonality and need a special team to help us grow into this next level of food service.
The Employee Experience
Our staff is the lifeline of the business. We respect you and treat you like family, and we hope you do the same. We understand that running a successful restaurant is a team effort, and we're always open to suggestions and improvements. While we are not perfect, we are dedicated to putting our employees in a position to succeed and to provide a respectful, harmonious, and engaging work environment. This year will be the last year we are working out of our food wagon, and it is a crucial year to solidify our systems, get organized and get ready for our expansion.
We strive to build a team of like-minded people that enjoy walking out to the garden to pick the day's veggies for our side special, herbs for dressings and sauces, tomatoes for salads or squash for our veggie burger. A team that understands the importance of making everything from scratch and using local, nutrient-dense food. We value those individuals that take care of themselves, love the outdoors and care about the ingredients of the food we use, and what it took to produce it. This is a happy, harmonious place, and our customers feel it when they eat our food and remember it for days to come. We want our employees to feel the same when they work here.
Work Schedule: The Harvest Grill is open Monday-Saturday from 11am-7pm from Memorial Day Weekend until the second week in October (except for Burger and Band nights when we are open until 8pm). We do expect advanced notice of any days that need to be taken off or vacations so the team can rally to fill your role. Bonuses are offered to employees that stay dedicated and work the whole season.
We are seeking special individuals that not only can work on a busy line, are creative and communicate, but who also will bring a positive attitude to the work place on a daily basis. We want to surround ourselves with energetic, talented, problem-solving, adventure-seeking people who inspire us and vice-versa. We encourage new ideas and want our restaurant to constantly get better.
Room and Board
Our location is nestled in the Animas Valley with readily available housing close by or in town. We would be happy to assist with finding housing.
All employees receive 50% off one meal a day. If any employee works 8 hour or more a day, we pay for their meal.
We offer an end of season bonus to employees that start and finish a season with us.
Getting Here and Getting Around
We recommend having a vehicle since we are 10 miles outside of Durango and there is no laundry facilities in the Animas Valley. With that said, we have certainly dropped employees off at central locations on Sundays and picked up when needed.
We always recommend riding your bike to work if you live within reason. It's a beautiful place to do so!
Durango, CO is home to amazing hiking, biking, rafting, skiing, stargazing and has many other outdoor activities. It is a small town of about 40,000 people countywide. Check out www.Durango.org to learn about all the cool things you can do in Durango when you’re not working.
The James Ranch is located 10 miles north of town and about 15 miles south of the Purgatory Ski Resort. We are a ten minute drive to some amazing hiking and mountain biking along the Hermosa Creek Trail. Road biking is great wherever you choose to start.
Trimble Hot Springs is only 7 minutes south of the restaurant as well. Fort Lewis College is a popular liberal arts school offering a college atmosphere and draws cultural entertainment.
If you are interested in the beef operation side, Dave James loves to give personal tours and even takes employees to our offsite ranch near Dove Creek to explain the full circle of the grass-fed only beef business. There is always something to do on the ranch, so let us know if you'd like to learn a little more about any of the other enterprises!
