Spend Your Summer with Us

Want FREE housing and WiFi? Want to make some money? Want to meet new people? Looking for an adventure?

Spending your summer in Skagway, Alaska will give you all of those things! Skagway is a small town at the top of the Lynn Canal in Southeast Alaska. It is known for its history during the Klondike Gold Rush and is now a major cruise ship stop on the Alaska Inside Passage. There is nowhere more beautiful with more outdoor activities than Skagway. Spend your time off taking a helicopter ride to a glacier, hiking the Upper Dewey trail to a lookout over the town, taking a whale-watching tour or driving into the picturesque Yukon Territory. Just make sure you leave time to catch up with friends and co-workers at the Skagway Brewing Company or the Red Onion Saloon. As you walk home check out the stars and maybe even see the Northern Lights. Working in Skagway is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and we would love to have you work with us!

What is the Store Like?:

What will your day look like? What do you sell?

Welcoming over 10,000 tourists per day, Glacier Bay Trading Company is one of the busiest retail stores in Skagway. The store carries t-shirts, hoodies, jackets, umbrellas, mugs, knickknacks, magnets, and so many more gifts. You'll spend your day doing lots of different things at a very fast pace, so if you like variety this job is for you! Your day might consist of cashiering, stocking the floor, refolding items and talking with customers. You'll give lots of directions and answer many questions about Alaska and Skagway. No day is the same, but every day is fun and exciting!

  • A history of fostering teamwork, including coaching, mentoring and disciplining staff members

Where Will I Live?:

Is there WiFi? Is it expensive?

Housing is so easy! We provide FREE housing for all our employees. We have multiple locations in town, including apartments and houses. Each dwelling is shared with multiple staff members. Every bedroom comes with bunk beds (you will have roommates), bedding, dressers and shared closet space. There are multiple bathrooms, access to (free) washers and dryers, kitchens equipped with everything you need, plus living rooms with smart TVs. Rooms are assigned, but if you come with a friend we'll make sure you're roomed together. Unfortunately there are no single rooms available, everyone will be sharing with between one and three roommates. There is no smoking, vaping, hard liquor or pets allowed in company housing. Everyone must be respectful of shared spaces and each other. All locations are within walking distance of the store location. The best part is housing and WiFi are FREE!

When Should I Be There?:

Do I have to stay the whole season? How do I get to Skagway?

The cruise ship season is April 26th-October 25th, 2024. We plan to have most staff arrive approximately April 7th for store setup and we plan to have ending inventory completed by October 30th. Although we accept some staff for a shorter season, we would prefer that Assistant Managers stay the entire season. If you have a different timeline please let us know when you apply. To get to Skagway you will need to fly to Juneau (JNU) and then take a state ferry. Don't worry we will help you arrange all of this and we will pick you up at the ferry terminal in Skagway.

Will I Make Money?:

Yes!

Our base pay for Assistant Store Managers is $21 per hour with some overtime hours. When you are hired you will agree to a contracted end date, if you work until that date, you will receive $5 for every regular hour worked during the season. Overtime hours are not eligible for the bonus. Don't forget all of your housing and internet is free! You'll have plenty of money for groceries and fun, plus we offer a 50% employee discount on regular-priced items in-store.

Is This Job Right For Me?:

Are you a hard worker? Get along with most people? Want to have fun at work?
