About Frontier Pack Train

Frontier Pack Train is a small family owned business. We take a lot of pride in the work we do and do our best to make our guests happy, take good care of our animals and run an honest business. We work in the best place in the world, our pack station is adjacent to Silver Lake in June Lake, CA and at the base of some of the most impressive mountains. We offer day rides, half day rides, multi day trips, wild mustang viewing pack trips, and multi day horse and mule drives. If you love the outdoors, working with stock and are a people person, consider us for your late spring, summer and fall employment.

The Employee Experience

Employees share a bunkhouse, bathroom, and communal kitchen when at the pack station. When out on multi-day trips, you will get to enjoy the crisp mountain air from a bedroll under the stars or can choose to sleep inside a tent. Employees cook and eat together and take turns preparing and cleaning when at the station. During trips, camp chefs will prepare the meals. There's a lot of room to find your place of solitude, especially when out on trips but even when at the station, after the work is done, it's a perfect setting to unwind and enjoy the mountains. Like any job where you live and work in close proximity, a good sense of humor and decent people skills make the experience all the more enjoyable for everyone involved!

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is someone comfortable with putting in a long day's work and still enjoys the company of others at the end of it! We become like family, living and working in close proximity to each other. One who enjoys the outdoors, working with animals, and has knowledge of wrangling, packing, and gets joy out of working with the public will do well at our outfit. We are looking for someone who enjoys customer service, you will meet a lot of interesting people in this type of work, and you will do better if you enjoy conversation and learning something new from others - this is as much of a customer service job as it is a laborious pack outfit! There's a great opportunity to grow your packing and wilderness skills.

Room and Board

Employees live in a bunk house when at the pack station and share kitchen and bathroom. During pack trips, employees sleep in tents or under the open sky, which ever they prefer. Room and board is included.

Employee Perks

Being an employee at Frontier is like being a part of a family. We have a lot of employees that come back to work year after year. It's hard to beat the location too. If you like the mountains, fishing, hiking, photography, mountain biking.... it's all here for you. If you want to learn more about packing, this is the job for you. After a season in the backcountry you will be quite proficient!

Getting Here and Getting Around

It would be ideal for you to have your own transportation but is not necessary. The closest airports are Reno, NV and Mammoth Lakes, CA. Eastern Sierra Transit runs buses up and down from both these locations on a daily basis. For the right candidate we will pick you up or help organize getting your out here.

For Fun

When the day is done, you will be in the perfect place to relax and unwind. There's nothing like unplugging and being away from civilization to explore your thoughts, read a book, oil your saddle, catch a fish or take a much deserved snooze in the open air. The Eastern Sierra is bountiful in all aspects of outdoor life and recreation. The town of June Lake and nearby Mammoth Lakes host a variety of festivals and events all summer long.
