Employment Period: Full-time for approximately six months - anticipated dates are April 15 – October 15, but dependent in part on Island opening and closing – impacted by ice out & ice in. The position may include the opportunity for part-time employment during other times of the year.
Salary: Range: $29,500– $32,500 for six months. The hourly rate for work done beyond the allocated offer dates is as follows:
Lodging is included, as are meals during the camp season at NO COST!
Position Purpose:
Maintain the historic Eagle Island Camp property, a National Historic Landmark, to the highest standard, ensuring a safe and exceptional experience for youth and adult campers and staff. Ensure compliance with state, local, and American Camp Association regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee island and camp opening/closing and ongoing maintenance, including water treatment and wastewater systems, water testing, sanitation, waterfront upkeep, tent setup, building repairs, trail clearing, and lawn care.
Manage on-site state, federal, and non-grant construction projects and contractors.
Participate in planning and prioritizing capital projects.
Coordinate transportation for contractors, volunteers, campers, and personal property to/from the island.
Supervise and assign tasks to volunteers; train and supervise seasonal maintenance staff.
Maintain and protect natural resources like forests and water.
Utilize Google Suite for email, spreadsheets, and other communication tools.
Optimize processes for tasks like water, sewer, and propane turn-ons and shut-offs, manage work weekends, provide daily updates on assigned duties to the property management team, and plan for maintenance, repairs, and upgrades.
Camp Community Involvement:
Train staff in tool and equipment use; maintain inventory, and care for equipment.
Serve on the Emergency Response Team for various emergencies, including evacuation of the Island.
Participate in staff training, pre-camp setup, post-camp cleanup, and evaluations.
Maintain clear communication with campers, parents, and staff.
Perform other tasks as assigned by leadership.
Qualifications and Essential Functions:
Experience with power tools, basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work.
Heavy equipment operation experience is a plus.
Strong organizational skills, able to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
Knowledge of cleaning methods, compounds, and their safe use.
Strong communication skills including being responsive and reactive when necessary; experience with Google Suite or willingness to learn.
Valid driver’s license; powerboat experience (NY State Public Vessel License or willingness to obtain).
Ability to train staff and volunteers, strong leadership, good judgment, and collaborative teamwork.
Willingness to live and work with diverse groups and promote the camp's mission.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to identify hazards and respond in emergencies.
Physical capability for outdoor activities, running, bending, and moving across varying terrain.
Comfort working in varied environmental conditions, with heat, sun, and dust exposure.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work at heights, and use scaffolding, ladders, and paint or cleaning chemicals
