The Blazing Mountain Retreat Center is owned and operated by the Dharma Ocean Foundation, a non-profit whose mission is to unfold and extend the rich and developing legacy of the great Tibetan Buddhist teacher Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. A centerpiece of Rinpoche’s teachings was his contemplative and nonsectarian approach to spiritual awakening, a core value of Dharma Ocean. As such, the vision for the Blazing Mountain Retreat Center is simply to create a sacred and protected space in which practitioners can explore the richness and bounty of their most fundamental self, their communities, and their own traditions.

We are currently seeking a Kitchen Manager, reporting to our Retreat Center Manager, who manage all aspects of planning and preparing retreat meals in Dharma Ocean’s Blazing Mountain Retreat Center kitchen. The Kitchen Manager supervises and participates in the prep and execution of meals, training and supervision of kitchen staff and volunteers, performs food operations management tasks, and models behavior that supports contemplative practice in a retreat experience. Kitchen staff sometime has the opportunity to participate in parts of ongoing Dharma Ocean retreats.

Location: Crestone, CO. Housing can be provided for up to 60 days until Kitchen Manager can find housing. Crestone has very reasonable rental rates. 

Kitchen Operations: Menu planning for in-house and rental programs. Oversee preparation of meals by cooking, cleaning, organizing, planning, and prepping, and supervising kitchen staff assisting in these activities. Creates and updates daily prep lists and task lists for kitchen staff and volunteers. Implements ongoing protocols and guidelines including food safety and workplace safety for kitchen staff and ensures compliance.

Food Management and Administration: Leads and participates in kitchen setup and takedown before and after retreats. Develops retreat and special event menus. Assists with receiving and putting away orders. Orders food, bulk supplies, and equipment. Conducting inventories of food, equipment, and supplies. Ensures that all food safety and sanitation practices conform with county public health laws and OSHA regulations.

Organizational: Modifies menus and purchases as necessary to stay within budget. Holds and communicates the kitchen vision and values.

Contemplative Environment: Guides staff in supporting contemplative practices in the kitchen, dining and other facility areas to provide an environment that supports meditation, silent and related practices for both in-house and rental programs. Ensures that any retreat-specific food or other requirements are incorporated into the kitchen workflow.

Staff Development and Staff Supervision: Ensures kitchen staff are appropriately trained and that feedback is delivered in a timely, effective manner to ensure the safety, quality and contemplative atmosphere of food services at Blazing Mountain Retreat Center. Along with the Retreat Center Manager, ensures that all relevant Federal and State laws are in compliance.
