Deschutes River Adventures is hiring for a guide manager for the upcoming season. We're looking for someone who has at least 3 years of full-time river guiding experience and preferably someone who has 1 year of experience managing people. We are a staff of about 20-25 full and part-time people who are passionate about the outdoors and work hard to provide an excellent guest experience. We love where we live (Maupin!) and what we do. DRA staff is usually 75% returning guides and 25% new to the crew. 

Employment Status: This is a seasonal full-time position, May 1 through September 30. Exact start date and end dates to be negotiated upon hiring based on trip bookings.

Location: Maupin, OR

Position Summary: The Guide Manager oversees the day to day management, schedules and logistics of Deschutes River Adventures’ guide staff for single day and multi-day river trips. The position requires collaboration with DRA owners and office staff to ensure a smooth and safe work day and to provide for an amazing guest experience every day. A successful river manager understands the DRA staff’s strengths and limitations, and effectively delegates roles accordingly to help day to day operations run efficiently, including assisting with the coordination of our rentals operations. Pre-season, the river manager is responsible for assisting in the hiring of raft guides and support staff, and for planning and conducting guide training. As a manager he or she will foster professionalism amongst staff and work to provide a positive and supportive work environment. Culture is everything, and we work hard to maintain the great one we have. 

Position Specific Responsibilities: 

  • Coordinates with office manager to develop daily, weekly, and monthly schedule
  • Communicates assignments to river guides 
  • Work as a full time guide and team member when on the river
  • Establish trip leader assignments 
  • Start of Day setup, including driving trailers and setting up vehicles for effective use. 
  • Coordinates with office manager for hiring and training of river guides 
  • Rental support and coverage
  • Delegates and holds guides/staff accountable for multi-day trip packing
  • Manage raft guides day to day activities 
  • Accountable for completing or delegating trip leader responsibilities
  • Accountable for ensuring river guides fulfill all their duties
  • Provides advice, assistance, and generally acts as a resource for river guides on roles and responsibilities 
  • Be responsible for the care and maintenance of all DRA equipment, including overseeing raft repairs.
  • Keep raft shop clean and organized
  • Help keep vehicles and trailers in clean, running order

Working Environment: 

Frequent lifting of up to 75lbs

Minimum Qualifications:

Valid Driver’s License
Clean driving record
21 y/o or older
3 Years of Full-time guiding experience
Prefer at least 1 year of managing a staff of 10 people or more

Knowledge of:

Company history, operations and DRA mission
Rapids and landmarks of all rivers DRA runs
Geology, History, Floral/fauna of the area
Raft and gear repair and proper use
Vehicle and trailer repair/maintenance
Boat/gear repair
Day and overnight logistics and scheduling
Staff management

Ability to: 

Show hospitality to customers and leadership to guides
Safely and cautiously transport guests
Work efficiently without close supervision
Communicate clearly to guests, employees and company owners
Keep calm in high stress situations

Education, Experience, Certifications: 

Upon hire, required to complete and run DRA’s specific trainings
First aid/CPR  or higher medical
SRT 1 or higher
Valid US driver's license, preferred CDL with passenger endorsement (we can help you obtain CDL)
