We are an ACA accredited coed camp in northeastern Pennsylvania, 3 hours from NYC and Philadelphia. Summer 2018 marks our 96th year! We welcome campers and staff from over 25 US states and 15 countries.

Located in the beautiful Endless/Pocono Mountains in PA. We are in Honesdale, PA in Wayne County.

About Camp Towanda

Camp Towanda is an "all-around" camp with cultural activities too. We offer HIGH-QUALITY instruction, supervision, facilities and care to our campers. In turn, a sense of security to their families. Quite simply, we provide a fun time in a safe and responsible environment with great people.

We run a well-rounded, wholesome program for all levels of interests and abilities for kids ages 6-17. Our program is very diversified- Tennis and water-skiing are just as popular as Drama, Arts & Crafts, Rocketry, Radio, and Lacrosse! Every department at Camp Towanda is important, valued and professional.

Not only do we take pride in our beautiful 300-acre facility, but our superb and dedicated staff. The role of a counselor varies. Department heads, specialists, group leaders, general counselors and kitchen staff all play a vital role as being part of the nucleus of the camp experience. Applicants must be patient, fun-loving, spirited and genuinely concerned with the welfare and development of young people. In fact; we only look for staff members who will serve as role models for our campers.

The role of a camp counselor encompasses a lot of different areas and the hours are extensive. You need major stamina! There is not much downtime for the entire summer. It is also an experience of a lifetime. You will develop lifelong friendships here. The majority of our staff comes back for several years.

Ideal Candidate

  • We prefer a minimum of two years of University by the start of camp, but we will consider those with less.
  • Applicants should have experience in a program area to assist or lead.
  • Previous experiences working with children is essential.
  • We look for staff to be positive role models with the ability to set great examples for their campers in a fun-loving setting.

Room and Board

All counselor and instructor staff live with children in cabins. The cabins all have electricity, showers, and toilets within the building. Most cabins average 10 campers and 3 staff. Senior staff have private rooms in staff housing.

Food service is family style with well-stocked salad bars offering fresh fruits and vegetables at each meal.

Getting Here and Getting Around

Staff with cars are welcome to bring them to camp.

Airport pick-ups at Newark, NJ (EWR) and Scranton, PA (AVP) are scheduled based on staff orientation dates.

Camp provides transportation to town on nights off.

Enterprise Rent a car offers an excellent rate for those staff interested in renting a car...minimum age 21.

Time off is spent by our staff in the beautiful Pocono Mountains of PA, Catskill Mountains of NY!

  • Great climbing, hiking, biking adventures throughout the region.
  • The Delaware River offers phenomenal canoe, kayak and rafting activities.
  • The Shawangunks Mountains (Gunks) are an hour away for the best climbing in the entire east coast.
  • New York City and Philadelphia are under 3 hours from camp.
  • Bethel Woods, the site of the 1969 Woodstock Festival is 30 minutes away and is a great venue for top-shelf concerts all summer.
  • Hershey Park, Dorney Park and the Harley Davidson Museum are a few other exciting places to visit.

You are on the field teaching, instructing, coaching, managing staff and closely working with campers. The program is for boys 7-16 years old. Within our county there are 25 camps we compete with on a continuing basis....We host invitational tournaments with our neighboring camps, as well as attending others on the road. We have varying types of competition...some games just for fun as intramurals, play dates with other camps, and some more competitive games where campers tryout, attend practices and play in single and double elimination brackets. Also, when you are not instructing or supervising at baseball senior staff get involved in all of the programs in the evenings that campers are participating in.

Teach children between the ages of 6 and 16 a variety of ceramics arts. Prepare curriculum, projects and supply lists for the season. Instructors are also counselors living in a cabin with a group of approximately 12 children and 3 additional staff members. Skills/Experience Completion of a minimum 2 years of university. Have an expertise to teach and to produce ceramics....Ability to teach hand building and wheel work...knowledge of glazes and able to load and fire an electric kiln. Must have an interest in working with children. Should have good organizational skills, able to work with others in close quarters. Be prepared to work long hours.

Teach campers 6-16 in current popular dance activities. Seeking choreographer to work with drama staff teaching dance for 4 musical productions. Live in camper cabins with 3 additional staff. Take part in all camp activities. Qualifications Experienced performance dancer... able to lead programs in Popular, street, hip hop and jazz to campers 6-16 years old...assist with choreography for 4 musical productions.

Pictures are taken using digital cameras with both manual and automatic capabilities. Photo opportunities are constant and therefore the photographer is never without their camera.

Responsibilities: Fulfill daily shot list of Camp Divisions and upload daily photos of Division to web-site Each day of the week is assigned a Camper division for upload, as well as continuously gathering generic camp and evening activities Process pictures, place in folder and batch upload through an automated system.

Excursions Leader

Camp Towanda

You are off camp, so you become the LEADER in making the correct and responsible decisions. It is quite an undertaking as well as an awesome responsibility. At all times, safety and caution supersede any other decision. Phases of this job will have you off camp as many as 20 days during the season…usually no more than 2 days consecutively. There will be one or two 3-day excursions where you will be 5-8 hours from camp.

On the days we are not on an out of camp excursion, you are another member of the O&A staff…assisting with ropes, climbing tower, overnight sleep outs (on site), campfires, supervision of O&A staff.

Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Remaining in daily contact with Outdoor Adventure Director
  • Maintaining regular contact with River Trip Facilitator
  • Present for and participate in River Orientation
  • Maintenance and Storage of all River equipment
  • Providing counselor/camper rosters pre-trip (written) to O&A Director & Program Director.
  • Performing pre-trip briefings (oral)
  • Providing after trip reviews (written or oral)
  • Organizing all equipment, foodstuffs, and logistics necessary for river trip
  • First Aid/CPR/Life Guard Certified as per American Red Cross...Wilderness First Aid candidate or certified
  • Provide continuity of care on the River and at Camp Sites at all times while on river trip
  • Provide leadership and maintain order for river staff and campers during ordinary and non-ordinary river events
  • Responsible for all aspects of program, equipment, safety, staff, campers.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

 

1.            Work closely with Food Service Director (FSD)

2.            Supervise and coordinate all aspects of KITCHEN MAINTENANCE personnel responsibilities

3.             Maintain inventory on a daily basis of all items after prep from previous days usage

4.             Work closely with FSD on next days purchasing orders.

5.            Organize spreadsheets of next days orders and how they are spread among vendors

6.            Meet with FSD and Operations Director daily to discuss everything occurring that day

7.            Maintain regular rotation of grocery, dairy, all perishables, produce, paper, canteen, bread, beverages served.

8.            Assist FSD and chef oversee stock and quantity of items produced.

9.             Assist FSD and chef to maintain health and safety standards for all phases of camp food service operation.

10.            Oversee staff in cleanliness of equipment, food prep, refrigeration and personal hygiene.

11.            Become familiar with Pennsylvania Food Service Code.

12.            Maintain time schedules of all Dining Room and kitchen staff for evening assignments.

13.            Supervise security of all kitchen related items.

14.            Work closely with FSD and Operations Director relating to overall food service program.

15.        Coordinate with Program Director and FSD on all requests for items needed for special activities, both daily and evening program

16.        Responsible for temperature charts in all refrigeration units, freezers n kitchen, HC Milk bars and dishwasher units

17.        Maintain appropriate stock and temperature control of each Milk Bar at HC's.

18.            Maintain behavior of all food service staff.

19.       Work closely with FSD and Culinary dept staff on maintenance of Culinary Kitchen

20.      Oversee refuse removal and Recycling program with Outside maintenance staff

SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY...3-4 PERIODS PER DAY...and supervising and teaching small groups of campers on a public 9 hole golf course weekly. The program is for boys and girls 7-16 years old. Seeking skilled golfers with ability to work with beginners and intermediates...and having a handicap of 5 or better.

Lead a department of 7 water ski and wake board staff. Skilled skier with experience teaching beginners thru advanced intermediate campers skills in all phases of water ski and knee boarding. Must be experienced boat driver. We will provide information to become certified in PA Boater Safety with online course. Be responsible for daily maintenance on 3 power boats....Delegate responsibility to department staff on fuel consumption, mechanical oversight, wear and tear of all boats. Care for all phases of daily boat cleanup and refilling of fuel. Complete daily maintenance log reports. Work closely with Waterfront Director and Program Director scheduling daily instruction on both Sunset and Duck Harbor lakes. Assign staff to varying schedules at both lakes. Keep track of progress of all campers skills as well as schedules for campers signing up for additional options. Be responsible for the inventory repair and/or replacement of all equipment during and at conclusion of the season.

Member of Outdoor adventure staff. You work in the Bikes shed maintaining 50 bikes...and leading bike activities on and off site. The focus is on teaching, instructing, managing the assisting general counselor staff and closely working with campers. SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY...3-4 PERIODS PER DAY...supervising and teaching small groups of campers for all age groups of boys and girls 7-16 years old. Take charge of replacement parts, the inventory and ordering as needed..take care of winterizing all equipment at end of season.

  5. Be courteous and help expedite office business and other office concerns in a professional and confidential manner
  6. Coordinate distribution of mailings and emails sent to camp families and prospects
  7. Be familiar with and follow through with camp policies regarding camper and staff telephone calls and messages
  8. Maintain a clean, neat and professional office
  9. Recognize the need to order supplies before we run out, ensuring a timely arrival of materials with no downtime
  10. Be prepared for the closing down of the office at the end of the season…completing timely tasks before you depart…and seeing to it that year-round office staff are brought up to speed on tasks that will require follow up
  11. Make end of season recommendations for office equipment, supplies, and procedures for the following season.

Our emphasis is on the production side of things. There is some opportunity for teaching the kids, and of course, you are still a counselor living with the campers but we act as the in-house production company for camp! Each week we produce a highlights video that is a mix of montage, skits, and newsreels. This means we are constantly capturing and editing footage.
