Female Pacific Northwest Trip Leader:
The Pacific Northwest trip spends 5 weeks exploring Olympic
(inland and coastal), North Cascades and Mount Rainer National Park. Our groups also enjoy a trip to the San Juan Islands and white water rafting on the Deschutes and Clackamas rivers (white water rafting is outfitter guided). We build our adventure program to allow the campers ample room for growth. The trip will begin with a 3-day backpack and plenty of local day hikes to break in boots and packs before jumping into 5 and 9 day trips. With mountain top vistas, day hikes, front country exploring, white water rafting and island hopping there is no shortage of magnificent views and endless opportunities for wonderful memories.
Female and Male Progressions Trip Leader:
Our Progressions Trips explore the scenic lakes and rivers throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin. Over the course of the full summer, our groups engage in progressively longer and more skilled trips, including backpacking, canoeing, and biking. Visiting the upper reaches of the Mississippi River, the North Shore of Lake Superior, the Porcupine Mountains of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and the Quetico lakes region in Southern Ontario prepares our campers and staff for their next summer adventuring in the Pacific Northwest.
Male Junior Leader Western Trip Leader:
The Junior Leader is a series of trips spanning 5 weeks for our ninth grade campers. The trip begins with some day hikes to get back in the feeling of camping in the Badlands in South Dakota. They then explore the Rockies by going on backpacking and rafting trips through the Tetons, Bonner's Ferry, Idaho, the Kananaskis Wilderness in Alberta, and Mt. Robson in British Columbia. These are some of our oldest campers, and have had experience on other extended adventure programs through our camp. Our campers use this adventure to really build their self confidence and independence.
Male Counselor In Training Trip Leader
Our Counselors in Training are our oldest campers, who have just completed tenth grade. This is a huge transition year for them, as they embark on another backcountry adventure, then return to camp and assist at activities and throughout the in-camp experience. For three weeks, they explore the Northeast United States, sea-kayaking off the coast in Bar Harbor, Maine, hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and canoeing in the Adirondacks in New York. These campers have a lot to learn and even more to share with each other, and with the younger campers whom they will influence upon their return to camp at mid season.
About Us: Located in Minnesota, our separate boys and girls camps are
a few miles apart and operate with a spirit of cooperation. Staff work at one
camp or the other and enjoy the availability of social experiences created for the staff to interact.
The Thunderbird community is made up of campers and staff who come from 32 states and 12 countries across the world. Our campers see Thunderbird as their second home and spend as many as eight summers growing up with us. Staff find their way to Thunderbird for one summer and also will join us for multiple seasons. We are also a great networking opportunity for those heading into to other professional outdoor and educational careers.
