About Camp Rockaway

Hitch a ride to Rockaway Beach. Spend the summer camping in a National Park at the best beach in New York City!

Recreational beach camping in Rockaway was popularized at the turn of the century.  The first wave of development brought bathing clubs, boardwalks, hotels, tent communities and roller coasters to Rockaway Beach in the early 1900s.

Today, a new wave of creative business owners are rebuilding and revitalizing Rockaway.  Re-imagined for a new century, Camp Rockaway fuses beach camping heritage with modern amenities.

The Employee Experience

The most unique way to experience New York City is to live and work at the beach in a National Park.

Both Fort Tilden and Jacob Riis Park are located in Rockaway, within the Gateway Recreation Area of New York and New Jersey.  Summer and fall are the perfect seasons to visit Rockaway beach. Quiet sunrise beach walks give way to the bustling "people's beach", with the Riis Park Beach Bazaar's food vendors, beach equipment rentals & regular live entertainment scattered up and down the boardwalk. Biking, birding, nature watching, fishing, hiking and more are just a short walk away in historic Fort Tilden. Surfing, shopping, dining, nightlife and more are just a short ways from camp. Downtown Manhattan is an hour by ferry or subway.

Ideal Candidate

Our summer season runs from mid-May until mid-October. Applicants with the longest dates of availability are given first consideration, but we also offer opportunities for those with limited availability. We look for applicants with experience in the campground or hotel industry, but a genuine and enthusiastic desire to work with the public and other customer service experience will be considered. We expect all applicants to possess a willingness to work hard and provide the very best guest service to all visitors.

In addition to seeking candidates that are guest-oriented, we look for those that are community-oriented as well. Your fellow staff members and nearby concession workers will quickly become your closest companions while on and off the clock. For this reason, it's imperative that our staff be flexible, communicative, emotionally mature, and able to solve interpersonal problems effectively. It's also important that our staff are able and motivated to take time for themselves when needed.

You will be successful at Camp Rockaway if you are friendly, kind, helpful, love working outdoors, genuinely concerned about making people happy and comfortable, and interested in participating in the local activities so that you can recommend them to guests.

Employee Perks

Camp Rockaway is proud to maintain great relationships with many of the vendors at the Riis Park Beach Bazaar and in the Rockaway Beach area. Because of this, our staff members often get significant discounts on food and beverage at the various boardwalk concessions, as well on the dockless bike shares, whale watching tours and more.

Getting Here and Getting Around

Camp Rockaway is easily accessible by car, subway, bus, ferry and bike.  Many of the local public transportation options will bring you right to the park.  A dockless bike share is available - camp employees get a discount.

For Fun

Camp Rockaway endeavors to be your basecamp and launching point for exploring the Rockaway peninsula.  While Jacob Riis beach is right outside your door, adventures just beyond the campground beckon. Here are just a few recommendations:

Get Active:

Enjoy pristine beach walks and hiking through a maritime forest, and decommissioned military installations at neighboring Fort Tilden. Tee off for 18 holes of par-3 golf at the beachside Riis Park golf course or try surfing, stand up paddleboarding, fishing, whale watching, jet ski rentals and more.

Culture:

A robust program of gallery shows, printmaking and painting workshops is available at the Rockaway Artist's Alliance.  Summer theater and performing-arts is ongoing at the Rockaway Theater Company. Both are located within walking distance of camp.

Eating, drinking & Wellness:

Rockaway has steadily become a food destination in and of itself, and the regular live entertainment and nightlife keep the peninsula buzzing all summer long. Creative local professionals, artists, and musicians populate the coffee shops, bakeries and brewery.  Yoga, meditation, spas, health food cafes and organic juice bars keep things balanced.
