The Employee Experience

Being a camp counselor is one of the most rewarding jobs you will ever have. You have the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of children and make deep and lasting friendships.

Agawam counselors are both cabin and activity counselors. As a cabin counselor, you are a role model, working with a group of boys to produce a cohesive cabin group, and as an activity counselor, you have the opportunity to teach tangible skills and ignite a passion in the next generation. Each summer, Agawam hosts 135 boys aged 8-15 from approximately 25 states and 8 foreign countries and employs a staff of 65. This talented staff includes 45 cabin and activity counselors who work with, play with and live with 4 to 8 campers in screened cabins.

Ideal Candidate

Agawam counselors are energetic, nurturing, inclusive, and creative and have a commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of children. Agawam staff are part of a hard-working and supportive team who works together to create an incredible camper experience each summer.

Room and Board

Room and board is included. Counselors live in cabins with the campers. Cabins are rustic with screened windows and electricity.

Meals are served family style at assigned tables that include all age groups. Tables change weekly. Our Chef and his crew offer meals for a variety of diets (vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free) and Chelsea's baked desserts are fantastic! There is a fruit bar at breakfast and a salad bar at lunch and dinner.

Beyond the life-long friendships and the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of children, other benefits include:

  • Brand new Staff Lounge, plus additional Staff Recreation Space with ping pong and new workout equipment; both have high-speed wireless

Getting Here and Getting Around

Many counselors choose to drive to camp. If you choose to come by bus, plane, or train, we can pick you up in Portland, the nearest major city. Portland is about 40 minutes from camp.

If you are looking to get off-campus during your time off, even without a car there are several options. Counselors car-pool just about everywhere, and there is a bus that goes to Portland in the morning and returns in the evening.

For Fun

Staff members have one day and two evenings off per week.  Some of their favorite activities include:

  • An evening out in Portland (Portland is a nationally known foodie town!)
  • Going to see a Portland Sea Dogs game (Red Sox minor league team)
  • Breakfast at Chute's - a favorite local diner
  • Going to the Drive-In to see a movie or to a more traditional movie theater
  • Hiking in the nearby White Mountains
  • Spending the day in Boston- 2 hours away
  • Relaxing by the ocean on a beach
