Remote Alaskan Ranch on the Edge of the largest protected wilderness on Earth!
Birch-Top Hill is a family owned Ranch in remote rural Alaska. Located on the edge of the Wrangell St. Elias National Park, the largest National Park in the United States and home to of many of the largest mountains in North America.
The Ranch sits on the Tok Cut Off on the North side of the largest National Park in the United States, Wrangell St. Elias National Park. We are located on the rural road system, yet located very far from any city or services. Set on a forested hilltop with amazing views of the wilderness that surrounds us.
About Birch-Top Hill Ranch
The ranch is a part of our family home, a large log cabin on top of a scenic hill overlooking Mount Sanford where a few acres have been cut out for our home, outbuildings and the home of an assortment of animals. The ranch is powered by solar panels and generators. There are many amenities and comforts unexpected in a rural Alaska environment along with the expected challenges of living so remote.
We raise many different animals and have several different business focuses. At this time our main focus is as a pig farrowing operation, birthing up to 120 piglets monthly on a year-round basis. We also care for alpacas, cows, Icelandic sheep, horses, chickens, dogs, geese, ducks, cats and other animals. Additionally, we raise yaks for our upcoming specialty sausage company. We are also in the process of building and developing a B&B with multiple tiny houses set on platforms in the treetops.
There are many facets of all of our businesses and current projects. We all work very hard and are also extremely passionate about the wilderness that surrounds us. We live by a "Work Hard, Play Harder" mantra.
The Employee Experience
We live, work and play together in a close setting with little/no opportunity for a nearby outside social life. We strive to keep our ranch environment drama free. The ranch is located approx. 1.5-hour drive from the nearest small town where you can find a small grocery market, a restaurant, and a gas station. There is a very small campground style store in our neighborhood for basic needs.
The nearest full facility cities (Anchorage or Fairbanks areas) are located approx. 6 hours away. Living in such a remote location can be tough for those who enjoy an active social life. If your idea of an enjoyable night or weekend away from work includes hiking, camping, fishing, canoeing, or any other multitude of wilderness activities this is the perfect location! Access to a vehicle is highly recommended so you can explore further, but you can hike/bike from our ranch to access endless woods and the National Park in our front yard.
We are surrounded by an indescribably large wilderness which includes all of the wildlife that you would expect to possibly encounter in Alaska... black bear, grizzly bear, wolves, lynx, many birds, small game, many fish and more. We try to co-exist with the wildlife but also know that hunting, fishing, trapping, and harvesting are also a part of life for those who have chosen to make their homes in this wilderness and we respect that way of life as well.
We seek flexible, independent, hardworking, trustworthy, fun people who are interested in learning and becoming part of a cohesive team of like-minded individuals with varied personalities. This is a perfect opportunity for someone who is driven to work on a variety of tasks, who is interested in learning, good with creative problem solving and who doesn't mind getting dirty. A person who has a passion for and comfort in exploring the wilderness on their own during their downtime will allow for a good balance of work and play.
