About Appalachian Mountain Club
For over 125 years the AMC has promoted conservation throughout the Northeast while helping people get outside into the land that has been conserved. From the early 1900’s these efforts included young people building trails and care-taking buildings deep in the backcountry. This experience fostered a lifelong love of the outdoors for many former employees some of whom continued on to work full time for the organization and others who pioneered other conservation efforts throughout the region.
From Maine to New Jersey the AMC runs overnight lodges, campsites and shelters that welcome all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts. Staff at our front-country lodges provide a welcoming atmosphere as well as advice to hikers as they plan their excursions. Some also help to provide meals to the overnight guests passing through. Our shelters caretakers are located in remote backcountry sites promoting leave no trace principles to their visitors who share their wild home for the night. Those working up in our White Mountain Huts help to carry food and supplies into the hut which they then cook up for the hungry hikers staying the night.
The AMC maintains hundreds of miles of trails throughout the region. Every year we hire over 100 people to work on those trails. These seasonal employees run around the mountains clearing drainages, building rock staircases and ensuring the trail is well marked as it passes through all kinds of terrain. Some of these trail-workers lead volunteers young and old into the woods for weeks at a time to complete trail relocations and reconstructions.
AMC is committed to reducing the barriers to active outdoor participation by youth, expanding the opportunities for environmental education and making it easier for parents and adult leaders to introduce kids to the outdoors. We believe that fostering a connection with nature among today's youth is a necessary component in building the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts and conservationists. Through custom experiences and dedicated programs for youth groups, schools, families and teens, AMC is committed to getting 125,000 kids outdoors each year by 2020.
We have a wide variety of roles that fit different interests, experiences and expertise. A common element with them all is an excitement for the outdoors and sharing that with others.
Room and Board
At most locations, AMC is able to provide room and board for its seasonal employees. A minimal charge may be deducted from the employee’s paycheck. While facilities vary by location, they generally include shared bunkrooms or tents with communal meals prepared by our talented culinary teams. Most of the facilities do not have separate kitchens for the seasonal employees to do their own cooking.
Housing is not available for year-round employees but we do have on-site meal plans for those who work in locations that offer it.
Both seasonal and year-round employees enjoy great benefits with the AMC!
- 4 night stays at AMC lodges and huts throughout the northeast and mid-Atlantic regions - a great opportunity to explore New England and beyond on your days off!
- Many facilities have great deals worked out with local businesses. For instance, AMC employees in NH can ski for free at Wildcat and Attitash Ski Mountains in the winter, and in the summer, they receive rebates on various race series at Great Glen Trails at the base of Mt. Washington.
- You also receive 30% off at AMC stores and gain access to various pro deals that help purchase gear at deeply reduced rates.
In addition to the above benefits for seasonal employees, this partial list highlights some of the additional benefits offered for our full-time, year-round employees.
- Health insurance with a hefty employer contribution!
- A retirement plan with an employer match!
- Generous paid time off benefits!
- A total of 10 night stays at AMC lodges and huts throughout the northeast and mid-Atlantic regions!
All employees, both seasonal and year round, receive an annual membership with AMC in the year in which they work. AMC members receive our quarterly Outdoors magazine, 20% discount on lodging and a 10% discount on retail goods and access to chapter events and activities.
Note that benefits may vary based on position and/or work schedule, and are subject to change.
Getting Here and Getting Around
As most of our facilities are located in relatively remote places, a vehicle is required to get to nearby towns and services.
In the White Mountains, staff members can ride a shuttle for free that travels throughout the area. There is also a bus that travels from Boston to Pinkham Notch Visitor Center.
In New York, Harriman Outdoor Center is located near public transportation, which will take you to New York City, though, you need to ride a shuttle to get to the public transit.
The glory of working for the AMC is that we promote outdoor recreation and have placed ourselves in locations that lend themselves to this activity. Working for the AMC means you will be in a community of hikers, climbers, naturalists and birders. From the Delaware Water Gap to the 100 Mile Wilderness, there is plenty to explore while working a season or even your entire career for the AMC!
