The Maine Woods Initiative is the AMC's strategy for land conservation in the 100-Mile Wilderness region. The initiative is an innovative approach to conservation that combines outdoor recreation, resource protection, responsible forestry, and community partnerships. To date, AMC has purchased and permanently conserved 75,000 acres of forest land, created over 130 miles of recreational trails, opened three wilderness lodges to the public, established an FSC®-certified responsible forestry operation, and developed a partnership with local Piscataquis County schools. This full-time, seasonal position has a consistent 5 days on, 2 days off schedule. It is a multi-season opportunity with housing available on-site. Our summer season runs from early May to November (Winter Season runs from mid-December to mid-March). Opportunities for alternative work assignments during out-of-season periods may be structured.
Daily responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- All aspects of meal preparation and delivery for each backcountry facility, from menu planning and purchasing to service and clean up.
- Creating wholesome, healthy and high-quality meals from scratch, while utilizing natural, local and high-quality ingredients.
- Meeting guest’s special needs diets as required.
- Procure food and supplies to support the use of local and regional resources.
- Implement energy conservation and environmentally sound practices in daily operations.
An enthusiasm for living in and sharing a wilderness environment is a must! The ideal candidate will also have prior meal planning, purchasing and cooking experience, exceptional customer service skills and an outgoing, friendly attitude.
