The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), America's oldest conservation, education and recreation organization, is now searching for a Trail Crew Coordinator! As a Trail Crew Coordinator, you will ensure a successful Teen Trail Crew season by identifying and assigning work projects and providing logistical support to our volunteer trail crew programming throughout Northwest Connecticut, the Berkshires and Pioneer Valley!
What is Teen Trail Crew? Teen Trail Crews are ideal for adventurous teens ages 14-19 who are interested in the experience of camping or backpacking and learning or improving on outdoor skills while engaging in meaningful conservation service projects. Each crew will have a specific project, which may involve clearing brush to better define the trail, cleaning drainage to help with erosion problems, installing water bars and bog bridges to stabilize the trail, repairing ski trails, building cairns above tree line, redefining protected land boundaries, working on shelters, painting blazes, building rock staircases and other crucial conservation tasks.
This is a full time position starting April 16th and going through September 28th. Candidates with the availability to work through the entire season are preferred, although, candidates who are not available for the full season are still encouraged to apply. Opportunities for alternative work assignments during out-of-season periods may be available.
Starting pay is $12.50/hour, and scheduled hours will range from 40-50 hours/week. Candidates must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends.

- Coordinate trail work projects for a variety of volunteer programs, providing written descriptions, photos, emergency action plans and maps of project areas.
- Manage a rotating schedule of day and overnight site visits to provide supervision, guidance and leadership to staff members.
- Provide logistical support for staff and participants in the backcountry such as bringing out gear, food and/or other items that may have been forgotten in packing.
- Maintain and inventory tool and gear cache, communicate equipment needs and assist in the maintenance and organization of all trails facilities.
- Generate comprehensive end of season report on volunteer hours, work completed and participant demographics.
- Enforce established policies and guidelines to ensure the safety of staff and volunteers.
- Fill in for Crew Leaders or other team members if needed.
- Assist in the planning and delivery of three-week staff training.
- Co-lead Leave No Trace backpacking programming on weekends occasionally.
- Participate in and lead weekly staff meetings as necessary.
- Must be at least 21 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license.
- Ability to carry heavy loads (80+ lbs.) for long distances.
- Must pass DOT and AMC driving record checks as needed to drive a 12-Passenger van.
- Experience building trails required. Experience planning construction/landscaping projects would suffice as well.
- Ability to critically evaluate trails to develop suitable work plan.
- Experience with facility, equipment and tool maintenance.
- Ability to safely work, travel and live in the backcountry for extended periods.
- Experience working with or supervising volunteers in an outdoor setting.
- Proficiency in the use of computers with associated word processing, desktop publishing and database programs.
