Alaska Marine Highway System

The Marine Highway System is an integral part of the Alaska’s highway infrastructure, serving our coastal communities on a year-round basis.

The Alaska Marine Highway System has been operating year-round since 1963. There are currently ten vessels in our fleet. Our route provides regularly scheduled passenger and vehicle service to over 30 communities in Alaska, many of which are not accessible via the road system.

The system cover 3,500 miles of coastline that stretches from Bellingham, WA to Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Chain.

Ideal Candidate

Experience and/or education in the hospitality industry (hotel, resort, cruise, restaurant, fast food etc.) is preferred. A strong combination of the following knowledge, skills and abilities are highly desirable;

  • Strong interpersonal skills and customer service aptitude
  • Commercial cooking and/or food service experience
  • Experience using Point-of-Sale systems (computerized cash registers)
  • Strong communications skills: verbal, non-verbal, and written
  • Basic computer literacy & internet knowledge
  • Ability to take directions and work with a diverse team
  • Ability to interpret and follow rules, policy & procedures
  • Ability to maintain composure & professional demeanor

Room and Board

Room & board is provided while on assignment - on select vessels. The crew stays in shared quarters and meals are provided at the crew mess on most vessels. Most assignments are a week long. Vessel employees are to arrange their own housing during their off week. Therefore a new hire should either be domiciled or willing to relocate to Southeast Alaska during their employment at AMHS.
