The Alaska Marine Highway System has been in operation since 1963. Our vessels provide passenger and vehicle service to over 30 communities in Alaska, many of which are not accessible via the road system.
The system covers 3,500 miles of coastline that stretches from Bellingham, WA to Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Chain.

A strong customer service aptitude is essential for this position. This is a public service role in the government sector providing service in marine environment. As such, a strong commitment to safety, customer service, and exceptional work ethics are desired. The ideal candidate would be willing perform functions related to food service, galley work, housekeeping etc. and exhibit the following characteristics;

- Positive, personable, and professional demeanor
- Adaptive to changes in a progressive work environment
- Strong conflict resolution skills and ability to work within a diverse workforce
Room and Board
Room & board is provided while on assignment - on select vessels. The crew stays in shared quarters and meals are provided at the crew mess on most vessels. Most assignments are a week long. Vessel employees are to arrange their own housing during their off week. Therefore a new hire should either be domiciled or willing to relocate to Southeast Alaska during their employment at AMHS.
New hires qualify for the State of Alaska benefits usually within 30 days of hire. The State of Alaska offers one of the best benefit systems in Alaska and includes medical and dental insurance with optional family coverage, retirement benefits, vacation and personal leave which accrues with years of service. Getting Here and Getting Around
By plane or ferry. You can also fly in and your stuff barged. Selected candidates may qualify for ferry pass if moving to Ketchikan or Juneau the first time. Details of this incentive program will be discussed with the candidate if selected for hire.
