Change your world, change your life! Spend a year assisting disaster-affected communities, fighting wildfires, and conserving natural resources with a team of young people committed to making a difference.
The AmeriCorps St. Louis Emergency Response Team (ERT) is a multi-functional rapid deployment group that has been called out nationally to floods, tornadoes, wildfires, hurricanes, search and rescue, ice storms, and terrorist attacks for over two decades. When not involved in disaster response or preparedness activities, the ERT assists the Missouri Departments of Conservation and Natural Resources, the U.S. Forest Service, and local Saint Louis organizations with conservation and natural resource management projects.
On any given day, an ERT Member could:
- Provide immediate and long-term relief in areas affected by natural disasters
- Restore Missouri forests, river-ways, and recreation areas
- Build and maintain trails, bridges, cave gates and more
- Fight wildland fires or participate in prescribed burns in Missouri or Western States
- Conduct disaster response and preparedness trainings for communities and other national service organizations
ERT Members come from all over the country and have very different backgrounds, yet always manage to come together to form a tight-knit family. Members frequently hang out to see a movie, go to a concert, play Frisbee in the park, or have a weekend camping trip. If you’re interested, you can always find something to do and someone to do it with. You are responsible for finding and securing your own housing, although most Members choose to share housing to reduce living expenses. Most ERT apartments and houses are located in the the Soulard and Tower Grove neighborhoods, all of which are within five miles of the main office.
Members will serve from September 2018 – August 2019. You receive a monthly living stipend of around $1,000 plus an Education Award of around $5,800 after the completion of the program, which can be used toward federal student loans or future educational expenses. Health insurance reimbursement is also provided.
In addition to financial benefits, Members receive:
- S212 Chainsaw Certification
- Red Card Certification in Wildland Firefighting
- CPR/First Aid Certification
You must be at least 18 years old and a high school graduate. You must be in excellent physical condition with the ability to pass the Pack Test: a 3-mile walk with a 45-lbs pack completed in under 45 minutes.
Members must have the ability to function as supportive and dependable teammates, even in times of extreme stress and adversity. A love for the outdoors is a must as ERT Members spend most of their service out of town, living communally and often sleeping in rustic conditions.
Are you up for a challenging and rewarding year of service? The ERT may be the right fit for you! Be sure to check out our website and social media pages to learn more!
