Work Location(s) will take place throughout the southwest. Member housing will be based out of Flagstaff, AZ.

Based in Flagstaff, Arizona, American Conservation Experience (ACE) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit conservation corps dedicated to providing professional development and outdoor experiential learning opportunities to young adults (18-30) interested in careers related to environmental stewardship. ACE is dedicated to developing present and future generations of environmental stewards and leaders

This 25-week professional development position will serve as an excellent opportunity for emerging forestry managers and professionals seeking hands-on experience with hazardous fuel treatment and reduction activities. Successful candidates will be provided job skills training, educational seminars and network opportunities throughout their commitment.

These emerging forestry professionals will be responsible for hand-thinning approximately 100 acres within Coconino National Forest. This project will help protect Flagstaff's surrounding watersheds and build local community resilience to catastrophic forest fire and post-fire flood impacts.

Due to the rugged and steep terrain in the region, the project area has historically not been targeted for fuels reduction treatment. The region is at high risk of a catastrophic wildfire event without appropriate fuels reduction treatment, which would result in severe economic, social and ecological consequences for the City of Flagstaff.

Project Work:
This position entails the following -

  • Working on a crew of 8 young professionals in the outdoors for 8 consecutive days, including camping in close proximity to the job site.
  • Operating chainsaws to hand-thin 100 acres of dense ponderosa pine forest.
  • Moving downed debris/slash to build burn piles for future fire prescriptions.
  • Organizing, recruiting and co-leading local community volunteer service projects.
  • Networking with multi-sector forestry professionals and wildlife biologists.
  • Working during challenging weather conditions (rain, wind, heat, cold, snow, etc.).

Applicants accepted into this professional development program will serve and complete a 900 hour (25 week) AmeriCorps commitment. Successful applicants will serve on an 8-person saw crew, working 80 hours and camping over 8 or 9 consecutive days, followed by 6 days off. Corps Members will also be involved with the development, recruitment and implementation of forest fuels reduction-related, volunteer service events in the local Flagstaff community.

Members will participate in a Wilderness First Aid course and S-212 Chainsaw equivalence training course upon entry to the organization and will receive a National Sawyer Certification Card recognized by the U.S. Forest Service. Members will be exposed to industry professional guest speakers during off-days.

As a federally recognized corps under the 21st Century Conservation and Service Corps, ACE members can generate non-competitive hiring status following their term of service. Corps Member who have served a minimum of 640 hours of satisfactory service on appropriate conservation project as define in the Public Lands Corps (PLC) Act of 1993 qualify for PLC non-competitive hiring status for competitive service positions in the Department of the Interior. This hiring status is a major benefit of taking part in the conservation corps and helps support ACE's role as a partner in developing the next generation of land managers.

Member Responsibilities and Expectations:
ACE places high standards and expectations for AmeriCorps Members. All members are required to successfully complete their term of service and participate in a volunteer service project held within their community.

Corps Members can expect to work long days, and must successfully adapt to various climates and working conditions. Proper safety procedures must be observed in all tasks, including the repair and use of hand and power tools used on projects. Corps Members serve in professionally supervised teams as they explore future outdoor careers, learn practical field skills, and develop confidence as emerging leaders in the field of conservation.

All ACE Corps Members practice environmental ethics, and are expected to work as a team in stressful situations or circumstances. Members are expected to be flexible and complete all functions of the job, including tough physical labor and hiking several miles to remote locations under adverse weather conditions.  

Qualifications and Requirements: 
Applicants must have an established interest in forestry, land management and/or environmental stewardship. Applicants must be willing to undertake arduous physical work with a positive mindset in all types of weather and terrain. Applicants also must be able to communicate and problem solve in a team-oriented environment to accomplish project goals.

Throughout their term of service Members are expected to:

  • Possess a team-first, positive mindset, strong and proactive work ethic, and professional demeanor.
  • Observe and practice all safety protocol, policies and procedures throughout the entire duration of the project.
  • Professionally represent ACE at all local community, public events.
  • Attend additional educational seminars and community events during project off-days.
  • Conduct performance evaluations with ACE senior staff throughout term of service.

Physical Requirements:

  • Lift heavy (up to 60 lbs) objects for periods of several hours.
  • Hike up to 10 miles per day with heavy backpacks and tools (40-60 lbs).
  • Perform duties in inclement weather on steep terrain without access to restrooms or developed sanitation facilities.
  • Bend at the waist for long periods and spend the entire workday standing or walking.
  • Ability to see, talk and hear must use visual and auditory senses to anticipate or detect safety concerns.
  • Ability to work in areas where emergency medical services are not immediately available and definitive care may be 2 or more hours away. 

Other Qualifications:

  • Position is available to US Citizens and Green Card holders only
  • Must be willing to submit to a heightened 3 part Criminal History Check
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Members must have personal medical insurance for the duration of their participation with ACE
  • ACE provides tents and camp kitchen equipment to all members, but members will be required to bring all other camping items such as sturdy boots, sleeping bags, backpacks, and raingear.  *

Compensation and Benefits:
ACE AmeriCorps Members receive a $280 bi-weekly living stipend. Upon completion of a full term and depending on the length of AmeriCorps service, Corps Members will receive an AmeriCorps education award of $2,907. ACE prevents financial hardship for its participants through providing free housing accommodation, tents, project transportation, and project meals.
