Crew Captain & Lodge Mechanic

Summary: Requires a USCG master's license (25 ton minimum) and an FCC marine radio operator's permit.  Prior experience in the marine tourism industry, particularly on passenger vessels is desirable.  Preference is given to applicants with knowledge of Outboard engines, preferrable Mercury's, diesel engines and pumps, waterjet propulsion, and electrical systems. Must be able to work independently and maintain crew boat and assist with Lodge maintenance on Generators, plumbing, and heating machinery. Food & Beverage and remote Lodge operations knowledge is preferred.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Transport Lodge crew to & from Orca Point Lodge, approximately 30-45 mins from Allen Marine facility. Make multiple runs during the day for supplies and crew swaps.
  • Communicate with Port Captain to identify problems and expedite repairs. Maintain a regular maintenance schedule on vessel & lodge equipment: Oil & coolant levels, fuel filters, batteries, and other machinery.
  • Maintain and assess safety protocols of Orca Point Lodge and Crew Vessel. Ensure proper PPE and fire prevention standards within the operations.
  • Supervise and assist in daily maintenance out at Orca Point Lodge: cleaning, water levels, sewage fuel needs and restocking. Coordinate and assist with routine maintenance and start-up on Generators & Pumps; dip, add & change oil as needed, painting, landscaping, etc.
  • Supervise and assist crew loading and load outs, safety orientation/demonstration, emergency response. Plan and execute emergency drills, equipment checks and safety meetings in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations and AMT policy.
  • Maintain all navigational & electrical equipment in good working order; keep logs and/or ship/company documents, as directed. Provide daily operations report to office.
  • Work in conjunction with the Lodge Manager for scheduling and operations at the Lodge. Pre and Post meetings with lodge and F&B staff to solve problems and logistics at the lodge.
  • Working with Lodge staff to maintain firepit, yard games, observation tank and general upkeep of the Lodge.
  • Communicate effectively with guests, team members and management.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience on passenger vessels and/or experience operating vessels in Southeast Alaska required. Required minimum 25-ton license.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Must have ability to effectively work independently to resolve issues and conflicts to provide quality experience for staff and guests.
  • Must be drug free (pre-employment screening and enrollment in random drug testing program is Coast Guard required).
  • Must be clean, well groomed, courteous, honest, and most important, reliable.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engine experience preferred.
  • Diesel mechanic & outboard or electrical/electronic background.
  • Experience in the tourism, travel or outdoor recreation industries.

Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Ability to walk on uneven deck surfaces crossing from vessel to vessel.  Ability to stand for long periods of time on steel decks with constant vibration and moderate levels of noise. Required to enter voids/engine rooms as needed. Must be comfortable working in enclosed, sometimes hot and noisy environments.
