Director of Advancement & Strategic Partnerships

Under the direction of the President/CEO, the Director of Advancement & Strategic Partnerships leads the development, implementation, and management of comprehensive fundraising, strategic partnership, and external affairs initiatives for the Alaska Native Heritage Center. This position is responsible for securing the philanthropic and institutional resources necessary to advance ANHC’s mission, long-term sustainability, and strategic priorities.
The Director builds and strengthens relationships with individual donors, philanthropic partners, corporations, foundations, and institutional stakeholders to generate philanthropic support and long-term partnerships. This role oversees diversified revenue strategies including major gifts, sponsorships, fundraising events, and collaborative partnerships that expand ANHC’s reach and impact.
Through its external affairs efforts, the Director works closely with tribal governments, Alaska Native corporations, municipal entities, State of Alaska agencies, and federal partners, while cultivating philanthropic and strategic partnerships with regional, national, and global prospects whose priorities align with ANHC’s mission. Through these relationships, the Director advances collaborative initiatives that support cultural programming, community engagement, and organizational growth.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ADVANCEMENT & PHILANTHROPY
Develops and implements comprehensive advancement strategies to secure philanthropic support aligned with ANHC’s strategic priorities and long-term sustainability.
Works in partnership with the President/CEO and Board of Directors to establish annual fundraising goals and long-term philanthropic growth strategies that expand ANHC’s base of philanthropic supporters.
Cultivates, solicits, and stewards relationships with individual donors, philanthropic partners, corporations, and foundations at the regional, national, and global levels.
Identifies, cultivates, and secures major gift opportunities and philanthropic partnerships that support ANHC programs, capital initiatives, and strategic priorities.
Leads development and implementation of donor cultivation and stewardship strategies designed to strengthen long-term relationships and increase philanthropic investment.
Maintains oversight of the donor database to ensure accurate tracking of donors, gifts, pledges, sponsorships, and engagement activity.
Leads the planning and execution of fundraising events and donor engagement opportunities that strengthen relationships and support revenue goals.
Partners with the President/CEO and Board of Directors to leverage networks, strengthen donor engagement, and advance high-level fundraising opportunities.
Prepares and presents advancement strategies, fundraising progress, and partnership development updates to senior leadership and the Board of Directors.
STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS & EXTERNAL AFFAIRS
Cultivates and maintains strategic partnerships with tribal governments, Alaska Native corporations, philanthropic organizations, corporations, and community partners.
Develops and advances institutional partnerships that support ANHC programs, cultural initiatives, and long-term organizational sustainability.
Works closely with municipal, state, and federal partners to advance collaborative opportunities aligned with ANHC’s mission and institutional priorities.
Expands ANHC’s network of philanthropic and institutional partners regionally, nationally, and globally to increase visibility, resources, and collaborative opportunities.
Represents ANHC in external meetings, convenings, and partnership forums to strengthen institutional relationships and advance strategic initiatives.
Develops and manages sponsorship and partnership agreements that support ANHC programs, events, and initiatives.
LEADERSHIP
Provides leadership and direction for the Advancement team to support fundraising, donor stewardship, and partnership development activities.
Develops and manages departmental strategy, annual work plans, and performance goals aligned with ANHC’s strategic priorities and revenue objectives.
Oversees the Advancement department budget and monitors expenses to ensure responsible stewardship of resources.
Works collaboratively with the leadership team to identify and pursue philanthropic opportunities and strategic partnerships that sustain and expand ANHC programs and initiatives.
Works across departments to ensure advancement strategies align with organizational priorities and community impact goals.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS:
Demonstrated ability to cultivate and steward relationships with donors, philanthropic partners, and community leaders.
Strong knowledge of advancement strategy including major gifts, sponsorship development, donor stewardship, and philanthropic engagement.
Ability to develop and manage strategic partnerships that advance organizational goals and expand institutional relationships.
Strong strategic planning and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Demonstrated leadership ability and experience supervising staff and managing cross-departmental collaboration.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to represent the organization with professionalism and cultural awareness.
Strong organizational and analytical skills with experience tracking revenue performance and managing advancement systems.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with Alaska Native communities and diverse stakeholders.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, public administration, business administration, or a related field. Relevant experience may substitute for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Five years of experience in fundraising, advancement, partnerships, or nonprofit leadership, including supervisory or management responsibilities.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, cultural, and community priorities of Alaska Native and American Indian communities.
Experience cultivating donor relationships and securing philanthropic support through individual giving, corporate sponsorships, or institutional partnerships.
Continued employment is contingent upon receipt of a satisfactory report from a state and federal background check.
PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS
Ten years of progressive experience in fundraising, advancement, or partnership development including leadership or supervisory responsibilities.
Demonstrated success cultivating major gifts, philanthropic partnerships, or corporate sponsorships.
Experience working with Alaska Native organizations, tribal governments, Indigenous cultural institutions, or community-based nonprofits.
Experience engaging with regional, national, or global philanthropic networks and institutional partners.
Knowledge of donor database systems and advancement tracking tools.
