JOB STATEMENT/PURPOSE:

The Family Access Liaison, under the supervision of the Program Manager – Tiamuna, is responsible for providing outreach, information, and support to Alaska Native and American Indian K-12 students and their families regarding the cultural and education options available to them in Anchorage. Also responsible for furthering the mission of Alaska Native Heritage Center and together with the Manager, supporting the success of the Youth Demonstration Grant-funded program to meet Alaska Native and American Indian student and family needs for diverse educational options in Anchorage. Works to ensure students and families have what they need to participate fully in the educational and cultural pathways they choose.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provides outreach throughout Anchorage service area to Native families with children pre-K through HS graduation to inform about options, assist with enrollment, & connect to supportive services.
  2. In collaboration with project partners and other community providers, conduct outreach in multiple settings designed to reach the families of current and future K-12 students.
  3. Respond to student and family requests for support learning about, enrolling in, and persisting in a variety of education options, through direct assistance and service referrals.
  4. Coordinate related activities including development of accessible outreach materials and distribution of material supports including financial assistance in accordance with the terms of the ACE DEMO Program.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in education, Indigenous Studies, Psychology, Social/Human Services, or related fields of study, preferred, and/or equivalent work experience in a related field.
  2. Three or more years of progressively more responsible professional experience serving students, families, and/or Alaska Native communities.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work productively with students and families of students.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, health, educational, and cultural status of the Alaska Native community.
  5. Knowledge, understanding and sensitivity of Alaska Native history, culture and peoples.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  1. Committed to achieving results under demanding timeframes.
  2. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across a spectrum of learning styles and settings, including one on one and to large audiences.
  3. Experience coordinating and overseeing successful execution of events.
  4. High level of planning/organization to prioritize work activities and realistic action plans.
  5. High level of quality management, continuous improvement and demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness.
  6. Excellent verbal and written communications and presentation skills.
  7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues and the general public at all levels.
  8. Strong computer literacy.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Additional duties as assigned based on needs of the business.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

Weather:

  1. Indoors: Primarily in an environmentally controlled office.
  2. Outdoors: Ability to work outside in all weather conditions typical for Anchorage, Alaska summers.

Noise level:

  1. Quiet to moderate.

Physical requirements:

  1. Employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 10 lbs.

I will also be provided a copy of a Company Policy Manual, detailing other requirements and responsibilities, in addition to those stated in this document.  I also understand that, although there are areas, which can be delegated to other members of my staff, I am fully accountable for assuring that these areas are carried out on a daily or weekly basis.  The functional role of Cultural Program Coordinator – Tiamuna Family Access Liaison cannot be delegated to another member of the team.
