Expedition Kayak Manager

Wages/Pay:
$3,500.00 - $4,500.00 / month + tips

Starts in about 2 months. (May 10, 2023)

Seasonal Role – May – September (exact dates may vary depending on schedule and availability)

40-50 hours per week – fluctuates with season and schedule

This role is based in Gustavus Alaska, a small remote town tucked near the heart of Glacier Bay National Park. This position is for a seasoned and experienced expedition sea kayaker. Organizational and managerial skills are key to thrive in this role. The Gustavus Kayak manager will oversee and manage all day to day operations, scheduling and administrative duties for successful programming based out of Glacier Bay.

Experience:

  • Sea Kayking: 3 years (Required)
  • Supervising experience: 2 years (Preferred)
  • Guiding: 2 years (Preferred)

Position Requirements:

  • WFR certified
  • Significant Sea Kayaking / guiding experience
  • Sending sea Kayaking resume upon applying

Preferred but not required:

  • ACA certified
  • prior customer service experience
  • Microsoft office / Excel

Position Overview:

  • Manage all Gustavus based Operations. This is mainly restricted to Sea kayaking trips in Glacier Bay and day trips in Icey Straight - Point Adolphus.

Schedule boat support and logistical operations are a crucial job function in running and managing all Gustavus kayaking trips.

Daily Forecasting and guide communication are critical aspects for success in this role

  • Maintain warehouse organization and inventory, Including but not limited to: kayak repair, purchases, food stocking for trips, vehicles, etc…
  • Manage field staff for Gustavus trips, train and support field staff, coordinate with Haines office for staffing decisions & logistics.

Support Haines in arranging travel logistics from Haines and/or Skagway for field staff to/from Gustavus

Organize and prep paperwork for guides and for trips, Pre & Post trip paperwork, ensure guides complete paperwork appropriately.
Manage payroll for supporting staff to be efficient and productive

  • Coordinate with AMG guests arrange and schedule pick-ups and drop offs

Communicate w/ guests via email prior to trips. Facilitate lodging arrangements and in-town transportation needs.

  • Manage office/warehouse staff
  • Lead day trips and expedition trips as needed # of days in the field will vary.
  • Maintain records for USFS reporting and GBNP reporting, communicate pre-trip reporting and post trip reporting with parks and land management agencies

Trip reports and tracking spreadsheets, management record keeping

  • Coordinate with Expedition Manager and expedition coordinator as direct supervisors
  • Manage positive local relationships & Represent AMG in a professional manner at all times with other operators, day boat team, lodges, etc…

Coordinate with local lodges for day trip sales and marketing initiatives

  • Facilitate start up and shut down operations, winterizing equipment, inventory control, office/warehouse cleanliness

Other projects, initiatives and tasks as needed to support AMG operations in Gustavus

  • General project and operational support Gustavus/Haines

Job Types: Full-time, Contract

Salary: $3,500.00 - $4,500.00 per month

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekend availability
