About Acadia Mountain Guides Inc.
Over the years, many talented guides have cut their teeth in Acadia and chosen Acadia Mountain Guides as the source for great training, ongoing professional skill development, and a diversity of work opportunities.
As a full-service year-round school and guide service, Acadia Mountain Guides provides opportunities for guides to pursue career development at various levels starting with PCIA Base Managed Climbing Instructor and progressing all the way to AMGA/IFMGA certification.
In the summer, top rope and single-pitch instructors can hone their skills at a wide variety of sites throughout Acadia and Maine while receiving valuable feedback from one of the country’s best single-pitch super-specialists. The multi-pitch terrain in Acadia, Clifton, and Katahdin is ideal for developing sound Single Pitch, Rock Instructor, Rock Guide, and Alpine skills. Aspiring alpine and ski guides can gain valuable winter and ice experience in the Presidential Range as well as on Katahdin, not to mention the opportunities to apprentice on an international trip.
The Employee Experience
What's it like to work at AMG? We value all our employees and the different skills they each bring to the table. We pride ourselves on our Just Culture Work Place Model. We always try to give the benefit of the doubt and work to hear where people are coming from. We aren't just a group of guides, trip leaders, or associates, but a family of friends who care about each other and the personal & professional development we each go through.
Enjoy getting out climbing with your coworkers for an evening of sending after a day of work in Acadia, maybe go swimming at our secret watering hole, or just take an evening relaxing by the sea cliffs. You can be sure you will end the summer having gained new climbing knowledge, sharpened your existing skills, and enhanced your client care abilities. AMG has a long list of senior guides and instructors who will mentor you all summer long to help take your professional skills to the next level.
Our ideal candidate(s) will demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making skills, tolerance and patience for adversity, diversity, and uncertainty, excellent people skills, solid organizational skills, and a strong knowledge of outdoor activities and outdoor equipment.
Room and Board
Room and board are provided for our Trip Leaders at our Orono location. This helps with allowing the most time off in between camps and guiding sessions for our Interns. We currently do not have our own housing for our guides on the Island of MDI, but do have many connections with renters who are happy to provide housing for our guiding staff. We are in the process of trying to find our own community housing for the 2023 Summer Season.
We offer many perks when you join the AMG Team. You can enjoy extensive gear discounts at our sister company Alpenglow Adventure Sports. Access to professional courses climbing/ mountaineering, Maine Trip Leader, WMA wilderness medicine, PCIA, and AMGA training discounted or fully covered to help further your outdoor education. Guides safety is our #1 concern so Worker’s compensation insurance is provided in case of any emergency. Finally one of the best perks of working at AMG is the community of friends and climbing partners you will join.
Getting Here and Getting Around
Personal transportation is required to work as a Guide at AMG but not required for our Trip Leaders. We do have a company vehicle that can be reserved but that is primarily used for large groups and/or our summer camps. It is important that our guides are able to arrive at our shop and at the climbing sites on time. We will reimburse gas and or travel expenses for travel that is done to any location outside of the scope of our contracts. The town of Bar Harbor is small so bikes or public transportation can be used to get around on off days.
Maine is known as being called "Vacationland". This slogan is great however it can't even begin to capture all the amazing things you can do during the summer or winter. With our retail store and guide shop being located in the heart of Bar Harbor, you can enjoy access to Acadia National Park within a couple of minutes' drive, bike, or walk. There are 100+ Miles of trails to hike and become familiar with on and around the island of MDI; more climbs than you can get through in 5 years; and access to mountain biking, sea kayaking, highlining, and more! If winter is your season then don't worry; Maine is home to multiple ski resorts, backcountry skiing, technical ice climbing, fat biking, and open water ice skating. Come join the team and see what everyone's talking about!
