Four Seasons Marine is looking for 5 full-time seasonal Deckhand and Naturalist positions. The company operates a high-speed ferry that provides service to Haines and Skagway in S.E. Alaska. Our ideal candidate is a good team player who enjoys a bit of adventure.
The Skagway-based vessel is rated to carry up to 150-passengers and operates with a 3-person crew: a captain, a deckhand/ naturalist and a deckhand / engineer. The employee must be able to relocate to Skagway, AK, and complete the entire season, some exceptions allowed. The season is April 15th- Oct 1.
This Deckhand/Naturalist job is made up of two engaging roles:
Deckhand: The job entails basic seamanship skills as well as assisting the captain with the safe embarking and disembarking of the vessel, assisting guests as they load and off-load the vessel and impeccable cleanliness of the vessel. We are looking for someone who is comfortable and able to work outdoors in adverse weather, able to squat, kneel, crouch, navigate steep ramps and stairs. This position is a safety-oriented position as well as a customer facing position and requires teamwork and positive guest interaction. Deckhands will also hold one additional role at a time either Naturalist or Engineer.
Naturalist: This position requires a public speaking ability and experience using PA systems. The naturalist will develop a tour narrative with assistance from the team and provide a guide to the guests about the natural environment we cross over the duration of the trip. Naturalist will inform guests of glaciated river valleys, fjordal estuaries, waterfalls, wildlife and more for up to 150 guests. This position is a safety position and will require emergency orientation of the vessel as well as working with a team to maintain safety and vessel cleanliness. Biology, geology and natural history background a plus.
Benefits: Housing is available for full-time employees and is $15 per day. All employees will live in the same building but with private bedrooms. Employees will have full access to laundry, pizza oven, gardens, yard games and bikes on a first come first serve basis. This position includes paid training and an out-of-state travel stipend up to $400 as well as the opportunity for an end of the year bonus. We also support employees through the process of becoming a merchant mariner and encourage our deckhands to accrue sea-time hours because we enjoy when our deckhands become our captains!
