Who We Are / What We Do:
Within The Wild Adventure Company is a family-owned and operated adventure travel business in Alaska offering two remote full service fly-in
lodges within Southcentral Alaska . We offer float trips (with both emphasis on sportfishing as well as natural history touring), backcountry hiking trips, dog sled tours, cross-country skiing, and other outdoor adventures.
Within The Wild Adventure Company is a partnership, in existence since 1983, between Carl and Kirsten Dixon. Carl and Kirsten travel between their lodges in the summertime and spend time at Winterlake Lodge during the winter months. They are both dedicated and committed to the philosophy that Within the Wild guests are really all guests in “our home”. We desire hospitality to be extended to our guests as if each one was an invited special friend joining us for a pleasant visit.
We pride ourselves on being a small owner-operated business that emphasizes personal attention. Every member of our team becomes a visible and integral part of our fabric. We are an extremely hard-working group, demanding much from our environment and ourselves. We strive for personal excellence daily, in the work we do and we expect the same from our employees.
Remote lodging in Alaska has had a long and colorful history and we are proud to be a part of its present and future. During pre-airplane days, there was a “roadhouse” situated every twenty miles or so along trails routes for the delivery of mail by dog teams. Some roadhouses were no more than squalid shacks. Others were well managed and had reputations for fine meals and clean accommodations. Both of our Within the Wild backcountry lodges are in geographic areas of the state that have a colorful history and a story to tell.
In 1983, Carl and Kirsten left the medical profession in Anchorage to live in a more rural setting. Riversong Lodge was purchased by them and has been largely built by Carl personally. In the beginning, we could accommodate only four guests in our one operating guest cabin and the main lodge was only a four-walled cabin in itself. Our early guests were primarily sportfishing gentlemen, and primarily from German-speaking Europe . In 1995, Carl and Kirsten purchased the properties now known as Winterlake Lodge and Redoubt Bay Lodge. During the first year, we called these places Hayes River Lodge and Big River Camp respectively. Each of our new properties offers a diverse range of activities for the backcountry explorer. In May of 2004 Carl and Kirsten sold Riversong Lodge to Randy and Robin Dewar.
Within The Wild Adventure Company is implementing changes in our marketing strategy that is moving us from our past into our future. We are evolving from a “sportfishing camp” history to being a full-service adventure travel company that offers exciting experiences for the non-sportsman as well as the serious angler. Alaska is becoming more accessible to families, groups who have specific backcountry interests, and other visitors less interested in merely catching a “big King salmon”. We are rapidly moving into a marketing phase that encompasses these groups of travelers.
Our philosophy towards the environment is such that we feel that we want to preserve the integrity of Alaska ’s wilderness. We promote minimal-impact use. All of our trips conducted on State or Federal lands are done so with proper permitting and responsible outdoor ethics.
Within The Wild Adventure Company is viewed as a leader and model within our industry. We are, in some areas, forging new ground, and depend on our employees input to help us along the way.
