Serving the public since 1931Wall Drug is located in the town of Wall, South Dakota, in the western part of the State. Wall's population is 800 and the town is situated 8 miles from the Badlands, 55 miles from Rapid City, and 70 miles from Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills. Wall has a grocery store, a library, tennis courts, a golf course and a park with a swimming pool.
Wall Drug is open year around. We have three pharmacists who work at Wall Drug. We have a clinic in town with a Physicians Assistant on duty. During the summer, Wall Drug has in operation 3 Cafeterias, Souvenir and Jewelry Shops, a large Shopping Mall and a Back Y
ard. Fall travel in western South Dakota is good and we are able to hire students who can work into September or later. Approximately 150 students are employed at Wall Drug during the summer, and at that time we have seasonal and full-time employees bringing our total payroll to 225.
Student Housing at Wall Drug consists of 32 dormitories which are homes we have purchased in Wall and converted to housing for summer employees. Approximately the same regulations are observed in the dorms as are found in most colleges. A Proctor is selected for each dorm and he/she is responsible for the upkeep of the dorm along with the assistance of the students living there. The Proctor is also responsible for the general welfare of the students who live in their dorm. When assigning students to dormitories, a great effort is made to select the dormitory best suited for the student's happiness. The same attempt is made in determining the student's job assignment here in the store.
Much of the hiring is done by internet and we also visit some campuses. If you plan to pass through Wall and would like an interview, please do not hesitate to contact us. All applications should be sent to:

PO Box 401 - Dept CW
510 Main Street
Wall, SD 57790If you have a prepared resume, it is helpful to have it included with your application but is not at all mandatory. One of the greatest benefits derived from working at Wall Drug will be the good recommendation you receive from us, as we have been written up in many major publications including Time, USA Today, People Magazine, and the International World Tribune, to name a few.
The Wall Drug Swimming Pool and Weight Room provide daily recreation for seasonal employees. In addition, we have soccer, volleyball, softball and dancing available. Store parties are given for the employees in the summer with free beverage and special food.
Guidelines
Most student employees work Split Shifts, that is: four hours on duty, four hours off and then they return for an additional four hours. Each employee has one day off a week, which is usually the same day each week.
You need to bring very little with you, if you are accepted for summer
employment. About all you need to bring along is single bedding, towels, an iron and an alarm clock. The dormitories are furnished and the kitchens are set up for cooking, including a microwave in each kitchen. The dorms also have CD players, TV's, VCR's and freezers. Uniforms are furnished for the ladies and Western shirts are furnished for the men. All the fellows are asked to bring western jeans to work in at Wall Drug. When you arrive, uniforms will be checked out to you and when you leave, you will return the laundered uniforms.
High school graduates and college students will be paid a minimum of $7.00 an hour. You may average from two to eight hours of overtime each week depending on business. The majority of last year's seasonal employees worked 8 hours of overtime each week. For every hour worked over 40, you will receive $10.50 an hour. Students who average 8 hours of overtime will receive approximately $364.00 a week or $1456.00 every 4 weeks. A performance bonus of 5% will be awarded to employees who do superior work. So with overtime and performance bonus added to your regular pay, you would receive an average hourly wage of $7.58. Last season, we paid approximately 75% of our first year employees a performance bonus.
Your Job Assignment will be determined by examining your application and previous work experience. Positions are available in the areas of Maintenance, Cafeteria and Retail Sales.
The Dormitory Fee is just $35.00 a week and $10.00 a week of this fee is refunded at the end of the season under the following guidelines:
1. You must be on the payroll the complete season.
(You naturally won't qualify for this bonus if you are discharged by the management because of dishonesty or bad work habits.)
2. You must fulfill your contract. You will not receive the bonus if you leave early to take a vacation.
3. Your dormitory must be left in satisfactory condition.
