The Pine Butte Guest Ranch is located outside of the town of Choteau, Montana, along the Rocky Mountain Front. Originally known as the Circle 8 Ranch, Pine Butte Ranch has been in operation since 1930.


Riding from Pine Butte Ranch

Today, the ranch is owned and operated by The Nature Conservancy, an international nonprofit conservation organization committed to the global preservation of natural diversity. The Nature Conservancy takes great pride in carrying on the Circle 8 tradition of hospitality, comfort and friendliness as well as respect for the magnificent country that surrounds the ranch. We are a small ranch, accommodating 20-25 guests each week, and are known for our spectacular country, great food, and strong riding and natural history programs.

Our Jobs

Wrangler/Family Programs: Responsible for leading guests on day rides out of the guest ranch and assisting with care of the horses. Operate the children’s/family programs a couple of days a week.

Wrangler/Naturalist and Head Wrangler/Naturalist: Responsible for assisting in the care of the horses and leading day rides for guests; Responsible for leading educational outings for guests.

Naturalist: Our naturalist leads daily hikes and programs for guests, discussing the plants, animals, local ecology, and other aspects of the area’s rich natural history. The naturalist also plays a key role in the ranch’s shoulder season natural history workshops, including two courses with ornithologist David Allen Sibley.

Head Cook: Create high quality, nutritious meals for approximately 40+ people. Work independently in the preparation of meals, and jointly with the Guest Services Manager in planning weekly menus, ordering ranch consumables, and maintaining inventories.  Work cooperatively and closely with the Assistant Cooks and Wait Staff. Responsible for maintaining a clean an organized kitchen and dining area.  Will oversee the Assistant Cooks.

Assistant Cook: Responsible for helping the Head Cook with baking, food preparation, and food ordering as needed. Will prepare nutritious and creative meals for up to 40+ people.

Guest Services: Position includes cleaning cabins on a daily basis, doing laundry, serving meals, and cleaning the dining area. Will perform other ranch chores as needed.

General Ranch Assistant/Guest Services: Half Ranch Assistant, half Guest Services, two days a week this position provides a full range of administrative and program support to the Guest Ranch.  These functions will involve general duties in the office and ranch wide including: answering phones, sorting/distributing mail, maintaining equipment, shopping for and ordering supplies, and organizing and filing, running errands in town, and transporting guests to and from various locations.  Additionally, the remainder of time is spent acting as a guest service staff with housekeeping and/or food and beverage services, etc.

Gardener/Maintenance Assistant: Planning, seeding, harvesting, and care of the ranch garden and greenhouse, keeping of diligent records of the garden and greenhouse production, and mowing and watering of grounds.  Additionally, assists Maintenance Manager with facility maintenance.

...is enthusiastic and friendly. We are quite remote, so it is crucial that our employees are team players and can work with folks from all walks of life. Experience in the guest services field is desired. The ability to be flexible and to laugh a lot is also highly regarded.

Room and Board

Room and board is provided to ranch staff at no cost. Housing is dispersed throughout the property. Generally, rooms and cabins are occupied by more than one staff member. Bathrooms are also shared by multiple staff.

Perks

Staff earns an hourly wage at Pine Butte and is paid every 2 weeks. Wage is position dependent and determined prior to hire. All employees share in tips, which are dispersed at the end of each month.

Getting Here and Getting Around

The ranch is located 25 miles West of Choteau, Montana. We are 80 miles west of Great Falls and 80 miles south of Glacier National Park. The nearest airport is Great Falls. Travel to the ranch is at your own expense. If you fly, we will arrange to pick you up and bring you to the ranch. We do recommend driving if you wish to see the sights of Montana on days off!Pine Butte Ranch

For Fun

Located in one of the most spectacular spaces left in the lower 48, this is an amazing place to experience the west and the outdoors. On your time off, you can hike, fish, mountain bike, horseback ride, and rock climb nearby. We are also within 2 hours of Glacier National Park, and the Bob Marshall Wilderness is out our back door. Great Falls is 80 miles from the ranch.
