Southwest Conservation Corps - Projects in Central/Southwest Colorado - Salida, CO

Seasonal Entry Level - Conservation Leadership Position

The Southwest Conservation Corps (SCC) is looking for hard-working, outdoor enthusiasts to lead conservation and youth crews in Central Colorado (based in Salida, CO).

Beginning April 8, 2013 – Crew Leader Development Program, ages 21+.  Throughout this seven-month program, participants will gain key skills, trainings and experience in outdoor conservation leadership.  A six-week paid crew leader training will be followed by five months of leadership experience on a crew completing trail maintenance, habitat restoration and other conservation projects.  Crews camp for 10 days at a time on public lands, work with federal and state agencies (USFS, BLM, etc) on important conservation projects and complete environmental education activities.  Benefits include: Paid Trainings (Wilderness First Responder, Leave No Trace Trainer, OSI Crew Leadership for Trails), Weekly Stipend ($300/week), AmeriCorps Education Award ($2775).  Candidates should have some experience with conservation corps work and/or crew life.  Program runs through October 25, 2013.  Be sure to select the “Los Valles – Salida, CO” region as your first choice.  You may contact the SCC Los Valles office with any questions regarding these opportunities at (719)539-2438.

Beginning in April – Veteran Fire Corps (VFC) Crew Leaders and Project Leaders – ages +21. The AmeriCorps Veterans Fire Corps program provides training and on-the-job experience for post 9-11 era veterans interested in entering into careers and gaining experience in natural resource management and wildland firefighting.  The program engages participants in a cohort environment in which a team of recent era veterans works together to train and complete natural resource management projects, specifically related to fire fuels management and fuels reduction.  Project work and schedules will vary depending on region and season.  Crews will work and camp at remote project sites for multiple days at a time. The VFC leader positions requires supervisory, education, and technical aptitude as well as a high level of comfort in the outdoors. Prior professional experience and leadership in wildland firefighting or fuels reduction using a chainsaw is preferred. Candidates must be compassionate and have an intense desire to devote themselves to their crew and the environment. Benefits include: $460-600 weekly salary, paid training (trainings may include S-212, Firefighter Type II or I, S-290, Wilderness First Aid and leader training), potential for Paid Time Off and health insurance reimbursement depending on position. Beginning May 28 – Youth Crew Leader positions, ages 21+.  This 10-week summer program is designed for individuals interested in working with high school-aged youth on conservation and community service projects in Chaffee, Costilla and Saguache Counties of Colorado.  Leaders complete a 2-week paid training and then lead two consecutive 4-week crews of 6-10 students.  Crews meet Monday through Friday and complete service projects (trail maintenance, fencing, neighborhood beautification, etc) as well as environmental education and professional development activities.  Most crews meet daily and spend nights at home while one youth crew will camp 3-4 nights per week.  Benefits include:  Paid crew leader training, $460-$500/week stipend, eligible candidates may receive AmeriCorps Education Award ($1175).  Candidates should have experience and desire to work with 14-18 year-old youth.  Trail work or Corps experience preferred but not required.  Programs run through August 9, 2013.  Be sure to select the “Los Valles – Salida, CO” region as your first choice.  You may contact the SCC Los Valles office with any questions regarding these opportunities at (719)539-2438.
