Being a Wrangler at SFR
Smith Fork Wranglers are above all PEOPLE persons. As a wrangler, you are responsible for entertaining guests, communicating stories, lore and history about the natural world and the ranch, teaching all levels of riders to be comfortable on our backcountry trails, and keeping them safe throughout any situation that may arise. If you feel you are a people person, then read on! If you are looking for a ranch job with some guest work, you’re looking at the wrong place. This is a guest job, with some ranch work.
Responsibilities of a Smith Fork Ranch Wrangler:
First and foremost, keeping safety as the number one priority of the horse program. This includes keeping a calm, confident attitude no matter the circumstance, showing good judgment with guests and horses, being able to tell a guest “no” for safety reasons, wearing a helmet on Mondays during guest assessments or at the head wrangler’s request, handling the responsibility of the being the sole charge over a backcountry trail ride, and being able to decisively act to ensure the safety of everyone on a trail ride.
Maintaining the barn, grounds, and facilities, including (but not limited to) repairing fence, building structures, operating vehicles and equipment, harrowing and dragging arenas and pastures, minor building and equipment repairs, and handling small bales of hay.
Maintaining the health of the horse herd, including (but not limited to) offering suggestions on herd maintenance and diet, inoculating and deworming, treating minor injuries, assistance in treating major injuries at the direction of the head wrangler, diagnosing potential problems, injuries or illnesses and removing the threat.
Furthering the training of the horse herd, including (but not limited to) riding young horses, green horses, and “problem” horses, approaching training situations with a clear mind, a confident attitude and a gentle hand, taking instruction from the head wrangler on training techniques and following natural horsemanship principles.
Compensation
Competitive salary based on experience and skills. Includes meals and housing on ranch.
