Stehekin is a remote community in the Lake Chelan National Recreation Area, which is part of the North Cascades National Park Complex. In this beautiful mountain setting the elements of your job will include both hard work and fun. If you have a ready smile, love the outdoors, are willing to work hard and enjoy working with people, this may be the place for you.
Located in the head of Lake Chelan, Stehekin Landing Resort is the perfect place for folks to enjoy themselves, whether they wish to be active in the great outdoors, or just sit and relax, taking in the fantastic views.
Stehekin Landing Resort is looking for a handful of well-rounded, hard working, outdoor professional people to work with us in the remote Cascade Mountains of Washington. Our Resort has 28 units including rooms with kitchens and a large Lake House which can accommodate up to twelve. A full-service restaurant accommodates most and our General store doubles as a concierge service for all valley activities.
Stehekin Landing Resort is situated right in the heart of the Cascade Mountain Range, and outdoor activities are a step away for our employees. We encourage all of our staff to take advantage of the activities as we all field inquiries from the public. As the snow melts off the peaks, our river becomes a torrent of activity and the rafting is at its best! Travel by horseback into the wilderness to see Coon Lake and a glimpse of our backcountry hiking. McGregor is a challenge to climb, and with so many other trails, there are always new and adventurous places to go.
If you are an avid fisherman, we have streams, rivers and the lake to catch a variety of fish. Kayak out on the lake with a guide over to see ancient pictographs, or bicycle up valley but don’t forget to stop by our world famous bakery. We are truly unique in the sense that there is no road that leads into the valley, and all of our transportation is done by boat or float plane. We do not have telephones, television, or a lot of everyday luxuries at our fingertips. The Resort is equipped with wireless internet for email communication and is a truly unique feature to our Resort.
Another quality that is unique to the resort is that some of our cabins are located in the historical district, meaning they are very old and protected from change. They do not afford lots of today’s luxuries either, but are comfortable and convenient enough to walk to work.
Most of our cabins easily sleep 2-3 but we have a few larger houses that can accommodate up to 5 so employees should plan on sharing a bedroom or a cabin. Private housing is hard to come by and pets are discouraged. Housing is provided for $100/month which includes all utilities. This money is accrued during the summer as a damage deposit and upon leaving, if the employee housing is in the same condition it was moved into, than all rent money is returned.
All positions are given a monthly paycheck based on the number of set hours worked per day. (These are given out on the 5th of each month) Uniforms tops and hats are provided for a professional look, and some positions have the opportunity for tips. Housing is provided for rent, and most employees will have two days off a week to explore the beauty of the park.
Getting here is half the fun…Stehekin is not accessible by road. To get here, you will have to take a passenger boat from the city of Chelan, and travel 55 miles up Lake Chelan to our out-of-the-way community. The nearest major airport is Seattle (3 hours away from Chelan), but you can also get flights into Wenatchee, which is only 45 minutes from Chelan. There are also bus options to Chelan.
Despite not being accessible by car from the outside world, Stehekin does have around 15 miles of its own road. This is a blacktop road for 4.5 miles, and gravel and dirt the rest of its length. You are encouraged to bring a mountain bike with you. The trails are closed to biking but the Stehekin Valley Road is perfect for biking, and a bike will give you some mobility. It is also possible to ship in a vehicle on the barge for a cost of around $125 each way. Sometimes it's cheaper to ship a vehicle in than it is to pay parking at the other end.
