Recreation

There are exciting activities and adventures for everyone in Juneau. Juneau has some of the most incredible wildlife viewing in the world. Viewing whales, bears and, eagles can be just minutes away. Our tour and many other Juneau tours will get you up close to Dall’s porpoise, sea lions, harbor seals, sea otters, mountain goats, and Sitka black- tailed deer.

Juneau is home to the Mendenhall Glacier, a spectacular glacier that is right at our back door. It is one of 140 glaciers coming off the Juneau ice field. The world famous Glacier Bay National Park and Tracy Arm Fjords are right around the corner.

If you are an outdoor enthusiast, then you can’t top Juneau. The protected waterways of Southeast Alaska provide excellent sea kayaking and salmon or halibut fishing. The Mendenhall Lake is an excellent way to get up close and personal with the glacier. Also the Mendenhall River offers great rafting. There are over 100 miles of groomed trails for good hiking and mountain biking that leads to the top of mountains for gorgeous views, to Forest Service cabins for great overnight camping, and to lakes, streams and rivers for great fly fishing. Just remember your bug spray and pepper spray.

There is tons of great rock and ice climbing in the area. And with a short drive you can get to a nice cozy beach for a bonfire where you can watch the sun set and the maybe see the whales swim by. Again Juneau is the adventure lover’s paradise and the adventures are endless.

Benefits

Four Seasons Tours paydays are every two weeks. Employees are paid at an hourly rate and your starting pay depends on your experience in boating, tourism and customer service. All jobs are overtime eligible. Overtime compensation is generally paid to shoreside employees for anytime an employee works in excess of 8 hours per day or 40 hours per work. Based on federal maritime employment requirements, maritime companies are not required to pay overtime. However, FST does pay overtime to boat crew and other marine positions for anything over 40 hours in a work week.

FST also gives an end of season bonus to all employees. Eligibility will be determined by two factors: 1) good performance throughout the summer and 2) employees must complete the contract dates agreed to prior to hiring. Your personal bonus will be based on your year-to-date pay. The company will multiply a percentage (based on sales growth, the higher the growth, the larger the bonus) by your pay.

As with any job there is a period, prior to working, of orientation and training. Four Seasons will pay for your training. Occasionally tips are given, and in that case employees may graciously accept. All tips received while on tour will be split up evenly among your immediate crew as the success of the trip depends on every single crew member.

Employees of Four Seasons Tours are encouraged to invite family and friends out on one of our whale watching excursions. It’s a fun way to show people what you do everyday and share Juneau from a unique perspective. Whale Watching watching and wildlife tours are complimentary for employees and their guests. All employees will receive 2 complimentary passes for our Whale Watch and Orca Point Lodge tour. Additional coupons are available for this trip for your guests at a discounted rate. As an employee you can always go on a tour for free on your day off.

Transportation Info

Alaska Airlines in the only commercial airlines that services Southeast Alaska. Visit AlaskaAir.com for more information on flight times and availability.

The other way to access Juneau is by sea, as there are no roads in or out of Juneau. The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) is a ferry system serving Southeast Alaska. It is the main marine transportation system connecting the smaller communities together. The ferry dock is right next door to our operation right here in Auke Bay. Many people drive up through the states to Bellingham, WA or Prince Rupert, British Columbia where they can then board the ferry with their vehicle and travel up to Juneau. Another option world be to drive along the gorgeous Alaska Canada Highway to Skagway where you can again get on the ferry and come south to Juneau. Check out all your traveling options with AMHS.

Juneau has 45 miles of road along the coastline going through Auke Bay (where Four Seasons is located), the Mendenhall Valley (referred to as simply “the valley” and where the airport is located and most of Juneau’s residents), and downtown (where the cruise ships come to town). Most of Juneau’s attractions are located in those areas and they only take up about 11 miles of road; we are a pretty tight knit community. The other 34 miles are considered “out the road” where you can access many hiking, camping, and fishing spots. The public bus system, called Capital Transit, is a popular, cost effective mode of transportation. There is a bus stop within a mile from the Four Season Dock and within walking distance to the Four Seasons parking lot where we provide transportation in company vehicles down to work.

You do not necessarily need a car to get around, but it is definitely beneficial to have one. The other thing to consider is a good, old-fashioned bicycle. Many of our employees ride their bikes to work.
