Work in the Shadow of Denali!

Welcome to Denali Crow's Nest Denali Crow’s Nest. Log Cabins and the Overlook Bar & Grill are located one mile north of the Denali National Park entrance on Alaska Highway #3, the George Parks Highway.

We are approximately 120 miles south of Fairbanks and about 240 miles north of Anchorage (two-hour or four-hour drives respectively). This is one of the most beautiful place in the world. Denali National Park and Preserve is over 5 million acres in size.

Few towns or cities lie along the road between Fairbanks and Anchorage, but the entrance area to the Park is developed with 8 hotels and many restaurants and gift shops. There are well over 1,000 employees in the area in the summertime and over 5,000 visitors daily so you will not be isolated.

If you are serious about coming to Denali, make sure that you are coming for the right reasons. Come to experience Denali and its people while working hard. You probably should not come to Denali if your priority is to make a great deal of money. Typically, wages at Denali are not high. We are also a non-smoking workplace so if you cannot survive without a cigarette, please do not apply. Come to Denali because you want to try something challenging and new. Working at the Crow’s Nest can be an incredible experience if you have the right attitude. We encourage you to talk with your supervisors and fellow employees to understand exactly what is expected of you. We are a small, close-knit family. You will know everyone with whom you work, and they will know you. We can guarantee that you will not become a number.

Recreation

If you enjoy recreational activities then you are coming to the right place. Activities at Denali include river rafting, mountain biking, bus tours (into the Park), horseback riding, flightseeing and, of course, backpacking and camping. During June and July it stays light nearly all night long so there is plenty of time to participate in these activities and more.

Animal life includes Dall sheep, caribou, grizzly and black bear, wolf, fox, and beaver to name a few of the 37 species of mammals. Over 152 species of birds migrate to the Park, and the flora is unbelievable in its diversity.

Room and Board

Housing options: Wall Tent

Employees may live off the property if they wish, or they may live on Crow's Nest property. We have 8' by 10' wall tents, wood-framed with canvas stretched over the permanent frame. (Yosemite National Park employee-housing style). The wall tents are not heated, nor do they have electricity. Each has two built-in platforms for a sleeping pad (provided). The wall tents are located on a beautiful part of the property -- so no commute to work -- and you may expect to wake up to a spectacular view of the Alaska Range. Employees will have one roommate although a few larger units house three people.

Bring a very warm sleeping bag, pillow, 2 towels, 2 fitted sheets to cover your sleeping pad, battery-operated alarm clock, battery-operated everything else (i.e. reading light for May and September) you need to make your life comfortable. We do not allow opens fires (including candles!!) anywhere on the property for safety reasons. If you want to store food in your tent, be sure to bring a container that can keep pesky squirrels out. There are chemical toilets and a central employee shower house nearby.

We serve two employee meals daily. Breakfast is served around 8:30 a.m. and lunch is served around 2:30 p.m. Each employee who lives on the property is charged $70.00/week for food. Unfortunately we are unable to cater to special dietary needs if you are a vegetarian, etc. If you work a shift that conflicts with our meal time, we will try to accommodate your special needs. If you order a meal off our menu, you will receive a 15% employee discount.

Benefits

Hourly wages vary with each position. Minimum wage in Alaska is $7.15/hour. Please ask about the rate of pay for the position you are interested in. Most of our positions are bonused; that is, if you complete your work contract, you will receive a completion bonus based on $ .50 to $2.00/hour worked on regular-time hours. Returning employees will receive increased bonuses. Bonuses are forfeited if you quit or are fired before the end of your contract. Non-bonused employees (ie. waitstaff) must post a contract completion bond of $100.00 which will be forfeited in full if he or she is fired or quits before the contract is completed.

Transportation Info

If you do not live in Alaska, don’t forget the cost of transportation to and from the State. Once you get to Anchorage or Fairbanks, you can get to Denali Park on the Alaska Railroad as a Crow’s Nest employee on a standby basis for $35.00. Management can send you a train pass and give you all the details once you are a contracted employee. The Alaska Railroad is also a great way to see other areas of the state.

You may want to bring a bicycle – it is a good way to get around. Call the Alaska Railroad at (800) 544-0552 to learn details about putting a bike on the train.

The Crow's Nest is located in the heart of the Nenana River Canyon, the central service area for Denali National Park and Preserve; our cabins and restaurant look over the Park entrance area. Once you are here in the "Canyon", most activities' access points are within walking distance or you may sign up for a space on our company shuttle van to your destination point. The departure point for trailheads or bus trips into the Park is a short walk away from our hotel and most all the other activity providers have pickup points in the "Canyon" where we are so conveniently located. Working at the Crow's Nest, you will appreciate being in the heart of the Park entrance area and not isolated too far away north or south of the Park entrance.
