Live your faith. Serve in Appalachia.

Christian Appalachian Project

The CAP Volunteer Program is now accepting applications for summer camp volunteers. Counselors, lifeguards, arts and crafts instructors, and medical personnel are needed to staff CAP's two overnight recreational summer camps in Eastern Kentucky. CAP also accepts applications year-round for long-term volunteer positions.

Christian Appalachian Project The Christian Appalachian Project (CAP), an interdenominational, non-profit Christian organization, has been serving families in poverty in eastern Kentucky since its founding in 1964. Through more than 30 different human services programs, CAP provides physical, emotional, and spiritual support to thousands each year.

Since its beginning, CAP has relied on the service of thousands of volunteers who serve with us while living together in community. Our volunteers build homes, visit the elderly, teach at Child Development Centers, volunteer with the developmentally disable, teach adult education, walk with women overcoming substance abuse and much more.

We also rely on volunteers to staff our two summer camps: Camp Andrew Jackson in McKee, KY, and Camp Shawnee in Martin, KY. The majority of our campers come from low-income families who pay only $10/week for their children to attend. Camp activities include swimming, hiking, arts and crafts, field games, canoeing, camping, fishing, and group devotion time. We seek to teach kids self-esteem, respect for nature, leadership, and team-building while giving them a week to remember.

We offer flexible time commitments:

  • Long-term (9 months or longer)
  • Short-term (2 weeks – 8 months)
  • Summer Camp (2-9 weeks)

Recreation

Our camps are located in the Daniel Boone National Forest which offers great hiking and camping. Volunteers also enjoy caving, visiting KY state parks, dancing, and spending weekends with other volunteer communities. Many get involved with local groups and churches.

Room and Board

Housing options: Shared House

Room and board are provided free of charge in community houses ranging in size from four to sixteen. Long-term volunteers usually have their own room. Short-term volunteers are often asked to share rooms. Food is purchased by CAP. Communities share dinner and devotion four nights a week.

We offer an “independent living” option to all volunteers who are married or over 50. These volunteers receive an elevated stipend and are required to find their own housing in their area of service.

Benefits

Volunteering with CAP gives you outstanding work and life experience, the chance to live and work in a beautiful part of the United States, and of course, the opportunity to serve God's people. Volunteer service can enrich your life in countless ways. Christian Appalachian Project

Financially speaking, CAP is blessed to be able to offer full room and board to all individual volunteers, and for long-term volunteers, health insurance benefits and a stipend. Volunteers do not need to bring a personal vehicle to CAP (however, volunteers must provide their own transportation to Kentucky). Potential AmeriCorps Education Awards are available, which can be a significant source of funding for paying off student loans, or for attending college.

CAP is pleased to offer AmeriCorps Education Awards, which can be used in the following ways: 1) To repay qualified existing student (college) loans. 2) To pay all or part of the cost of attending a qualified institution of higher education (including certain vocational programs). 3) To pay expenses incurred while participating in an approved school-to-work program.

For more info about AmeriCorps Education Awards please call the CAP Volunteer Program office at 1-800-755-5322.

Transportation Info

Volunteers are responsible for their own transportation to and from CAP, but we will provide shuttle service from the airport. We offer travel reimbursement to all long-term volunteers.
