Welcome to Flagg Ranch Resort

Thank you for your interest in being part of our guest service staff. Flagg Ranch Resort is nicely located on the banks of the scenic Snake River, two miles south of Yellowstone National Park and five miles north of Grand Teton National Park. Flagg Ranch is now the oldest, continually operating resort in upper Jackson Hole.

Flagg Ranch History

In 1805, the Louisiana Purchase was concluded and the French ceded their rights to a vast expanse of western territory-including the Flagg Ranch area. Bands of Indians, trappers, traders, prospectors and government explorers, due to its flat expance and abundance of fish and game, frequented the area surrounding Flagg Ranch. The United States Cavalry made the first permanent occupation of the area in 1872. The third military superintendent, Captain George Anderson, established the Snake River Military Station in 1895 along Polecat Creek, which now serves as the western boundary of Flagg Ranch. International Leisure Hosts, Ltd. , a publicly held company operating the resort under the authority of the National Park Service, purchased the resort in 1964. In April of 1981, a fire destroyed the original lodge. Temporary facilities were used until the present facility was completed in 1995.

Originally Flagg Ranch was the 1st Cavalry outpost of Yellowstone. Travelers from Yellowstone and Jackson Hole would stop at the outpost to eat and rest. The travelers identified the outpost by the flags that were raised and could be seen through the trees. When Edward S. Sheffield founded the resort in the years between 1910 and 1916 he named it Flagg Ranch. No one knows why Flagg is spelled with 2 “g’s.”

Some of the log buildings remaining at Flagg Ranch show the architecture and living conditions that the soldiers and early operators of Flagg Ranch worked in. Flagg Ranch is now the oldest continually operating resort in upper Jackson Hole.
