Spend your summer caring for an Iditarod Champion sled dog kennel on our Alaskan homestead.

    Iditarod Champion Dallas Seavey and his wife Jen are looking for a responsible, hard working person to care for their kennel of 100 Alaskan Huskies for the summer. In addition to kennel chores, there are extensive property maintenance and construction projects planned for the homestead. Preference will be given to applicants with ranching/farming experience including working with livestock, as well as individuals who have experience with working dogs.

Kennel chores- The dogs are fed and watered every morning and evening. All dog poop is cleaned up twice daily prior to feeding. This is a physically demanding job, and all applicants must be able to lift and carry 50lbs.

Puppies- Free running and socializing puppies is an important part of our kennel's training program. We are expecting several litters to be born this summer.

Dog care is a top priority. As the main care taker of the kennel, you are expected to monitor the health of the dogs. You will be trained to administer canine first aid, medications, de-wormer, and vaccinations.

ATV mushing- This is the off season for our dogs. We start serious training in the Fall, but you will work with us to “harness break” our 9 month old puppies using a four-wheeler to run them on a dirt trail. This will require you to learn basic mushing skills including harnessing, hooking up, and team management.

Property maintenance- You will be responsible for basic property upkeep as needed to keep things in working order. This may include light dirt work with a tractor, landscaping, raking, fencing, and tree clearing. Experience with a chain saw is preferred.

Construction Projects-We have many outdoor projects for this summer including sanding and staining decks and trim, painting/staining buildings, installing exterior siding, and some new construction. Basic carpentry skills required.

Indoor Construction- We will be finishing our crew housing, so any electrical or plumbing experience would be helpful. We also have lots of mudding, painting and trim work to do. Experience with power tools required.

Care-taking responsibilities- We have a house and a couple of pets and plants that will need looked after when we are traveling.

Expect a full work day of working on projects and doing dog chores 4 days a week. The other 3 days a week, you will only be expected to do the morning and evening dog chores; the rest of the day is yours to explore and enjoy Alaska. Upon mutual agreement, we can schedule several days off in a row for any planned adventures you may have. We are within a half hour drive of world class salmon fishing and hiking trails, and are only 45 minutes from the town of Talkeetna, a unique Alaskan destination.

We are looking to fill this position immediately. All applicants must be able to stay through September 15^th. Housing will be provided. Compensation includes a monthly salary of $1,000 and a vehicle for your personal use. (You will be responsible for buying your fuel.) You will also receive a bonus of $500 per month at the end of the season. If interested, you’ll have the opportunity to work year round handling for our Iditarod racing team through the winter.

Employees are responsible for their own travel expenses. If you can get a flight into Anchorage, we can get you to the kennel from there.
