Dress:
We provide 2 employee polo shirts for all our front-line employees: front desk,
drivers, housekeepers, bartenders, waitstaff. We will wash alternate ones
daily for you. Bring several pairs of tan colored docker-type slacks for
the rest of your working uniform. We want you to look as if you just
walked out of an L.L. Bean catalog. You must be neat and tidy as all of
our employees have direct contact with our customers. We do not
allow textured-sole (vibram) boots on the job for any position in order to
protect our floors. No Berks (with or without socks) are allowed on the
job. Long hair and beards are acceptable as long as they as well-trimmed
and combed. We allow no facial hardware, pierced tongues, or dreadlocks.
Restaurant staff such as cook and dishwashers will be provided with cook coats.
Meals: We serve two employee meals daily. Breakfast is served
around 8:30 a.m. and lunch is served around 2:30 p.m. Each employee who
lives on the property is charged $70.00/week for food. We are sorry, but we cannot cater to special dietary needs such as those for strict vegetarians, etc. If you work a shift
that conflicts with our meal time, we will try to accommodate your special
needs. If you order a meal off our menu, you will receive a 15% employee
discount.
Money: You will be paid every two weeks. We are not set up to do direct deposits to your personal bank account and there is no bank at Denali. The best way to take care of your money is to open a checking account at your own bank before you come to Denali. Then mail your employment check to your bank for deposit. If you need cash, you may cash a personal check for up to $50.00 at our front desk. You may do this once/week. If you need more cash on hand, you may cash your paycheck at a few nearby businesses for a small fee.
Transportation: If you do not live in Alaska, don’t forget the cost of transportation to and from the State. Once you get to Anchorage or Fairbanks, you can get to Denali Park on the Alaska Railroad as a Crow’s Nest employee on a standby basis for $35.00. Management can send you a train pass and give you all the details once you are a contracted employee.
Mail: Post Office boxes are available early in the season at the Denali Post Office. You will need a picture I.D., and it will cost you $11.00 plus $1.00 for each extra key. Post office boxes are limited and are taken early in the season, so be sure to do this as soon as you arrive. The Crow’s Nest will not accept your personal mail as it will not fit into our post office box. Any personal mail sent to the Crow's Nest's post office box will be returned to the sender (we cannot take responsibility for your personal mail). If you do not have a post office box, have your mail sent to you c/o "General Delivery, Denali National Park, Alaska 99755.
Weather/Temperature: In May and September, it can be cool, perhaps as low as mid-20’s at night, but throughout the summer the normal temperature is in the high 70’s or warmer with nighttime temperatures of 40-50 degrees. You can expect varied weather so bring rain gear, warm clothing, shorts, and good hiking boots.
Living Situation: Employees may live off the property if they wish, or they may live on Crow’s Nest property. We have 8’ by 10’ wall tents, wood-framed with canvas stretched over the permanent frame. (Yosemite National Park employee-housing style). The wall tents are not heated, nor do they have electricity. Each has two built-in platforms for a sleeping pad (provided). Bring 2 fitted single sheets for covering your pad. The wall tents are located on a beautiful part of the property -- so no commute to work -- and you may expect to wake up to a spectacular view of the Alaska Range. Employees should expect to have one roommate although a few larger tents house three employees.
Bring a very warm sleeping bag, pillow, 2 towels, 2 fitted single sheets to cover your pad, battery-operated alarm clock, battery-operated everything else (i.e. reading light for May and September) that you will need to make your life comfortable. We do not allow open fires (including candles!) anywhere on property for safety reasons. If you want to store food in your tent, be sure to bring a container that can keep pesky tree squirrels (a.k.a. “tree rats”) out. There are chemicals toilets and a central employee shower house nearby. You may want to bring a pair of flip flops for the shower. Pets are not allowed on the property. We do not have laundry facilities, but there is a public laundromat just inside the Park entrance and a KOA laundromat 9 miles north of us in Healy.
We do not allow firearms or fireworks on the Crow’s Nest property.
You may want to bring a bicycle – it is a good way to get around. Call the Alaska Railroad at (800) 544-0552 to learn details about putting a bike on the train.
