Why We Hate HR

Want a frank, sometimes funny, and wide-angle look at the state of HR? Check out this article from "Fast Company" magazine. Some gems:

  • "The human-resources trade long ago proved itself, at best, a necessary evil -- and at worst, a dark bureaucratic force that blindly enforces nonsensical rules, resists creativity, and impedes constructive change."
  • "...why does HR insist on sameness as a proxy for equity?"
  • in a 2005 survey "...only about half of workers below the manager level believed their companies took a genuine interest in their well-being."
  • "...a considerably smaller proportion of HR professionals today have some education beyond a bachelor's degree than in 1990."
  • "The truth? Most human-resources managers aren't particularly interested in, or equipped for, doing business. And in a business, that's sort of a problem."

Love it or hate it, you should read it.

This is one of the reasons why I left a career as an assistant grocery manager and rediscovered my passion for human resources as a consultant.

HR is a staff department, not a line department. The true HR professional is supposed to be a consultant to the organization's managers. That means the managers are the customers of HR. For example, if a manager has a problem with turnover in his or her department, then that manager needs to contact HR for a consultation. A representative from HR would then work with the manager of that department to come up with a solution.

Furthermore, the HR professional should never act as the employee's manager and tell the employee's what to do. That is giving HR the lack of respect and professionalism that many HR professionals are seeking.

The article mischaracterizes HR. As a 20 year HR generalist I've had great experiences working with line managers to drive employee retention, productivity and creating workplaces that are competitive. This articles looks at the extremes and sensationalizes it.

Not convinced.
