Sitka, Alaska's first capital is considered to be one of Alaska's most picturesque and historically fascinating communities (population: 9,000). Sitka is a very pedestrian and bike-friendly town with 7 miles of road in each direction from the downtown area. Local bus service is also available.

For Fun
Alaska is like nowhere else on earth. Its great expanses of raw, dramatic, untouched wilderness have a profound effect on visitors and residents alike. In Southeast Alaska there are countless glaciers and remote islands that are home to an abundance of wildlife.

What is there to do in Southeast Alaska? Just about everything from strenuous to leisurely! Just to get started you can kayak, hike or mountain bike, camp on a pristine beach, or rent a Forest Service cabin accessible by trail, boat or float plane. The fishing here is world-class. Fly-fish for trout on a lake or rent a skiff and troll for salmon in a bay. Local recreation centers offer a variety of activities from swimming to racquetball to martial arts to belly dancing! Local artists and experts offer workshops and lectures in traditional native and classical art forms, natural and local history and maritime science. Explore your artistic side by attending a wide variety of festivals and performances scheduled throughout the summer featuring local and visiting artists in music, dance and theatre. Browse local galleries, museums and libraries for a glimpse into the cultural panorama. Or just join your friends at the end of the day to enjoy a hearty Alaskan meal of all-you-can-eat crab or awesome halibut pulled from the local waters.
