Lead and Assistant Guides Needed June-August 2013


Alaska Outdoors is a small “boutique” tour company that specializes in operating 7-21 day camping and hiking tours throughout Alaska. We will be looking for lead and assistant guides from June through August. Our itineraries are active and offer our guests and guides access to a variety of recreational activities; whitewater river rafting, sea kayaking, ice climbing, glacier trekking, glacier/ wildlife cruises and more.

We will be hiring full time guides (Alaska experience a must). We are also hiring several guide assistant positions. These positions will spend their time between working in basecamp and assisting lead guides in the field.

Our Ideal Candidate

We recognize that our guide staff is the most important component of operating successful trips year after year. We screen all potential candidates carefully and are looking for well-rounded individuals that understand the important role that they play in affecting positive outcomes on organized group trips. The days are long and the work is very gratifying.

Our ideal candidate has the following experience: 

  • Alaska trip guiding experience
  • Experience camping in Alaska
  • Clean, or mostly perfect driving record
  • Knowledge of Alaskan natural history and willingness to learn more
  • Experience cooking and managing food on multi-day trips
  • Current 1st Aid and CPR certification (wilderness first responder or higher preferred)

Room and Board

Alaska Outdoors CampLead guides can expect to spend most of their time during the summer camping in the field while leading trips. Assistant guides will share their time between the field and basecamp. While in the field, guides camp and prepare meals at established camping areas with our guests. While not in the field, all staff are welcome to stay at our basecamp in rural Wasilla, Alaska. We will provide a private spot on the property to put a tent with access to an indoor “lounge” with couch and TV, kitchen, bath and laundry. Your commute to work is a 30 second walk. Meals while in the field are all included. At basecamp, there is generally some food available, though must be supplemented individually. We will provide regular transportation into town for you to buy food for your time at basecamp.

The itineraries conducted by Alaska Outdoors offer terrific exposure to the variety of locations and activities throughout the state that have made Alaska a world class eco-tour destination. Our guides experience these destinations and activities as part of their job. Compensation is dependent on experience. All staff are well compensated, above industry standards, and receive tips and commissions. Living expenses are nominal.

Getting Here and Getting Around

All staff must arrange their own transportation to from Anchorage, Alaska. Alaska Outdoors will provide transportation to and from Anchorage. Transportation within Alaska during “off” time is generally not provided.

For Fun

Wasilla is very conveniently located near outstanding outdoor recreational activities. Hiking, Mt. biking, glacier trekking, and rafting are all nearby. We are 1 hour from Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city.
