Lead and Assistant Guides Wanted June through August
Alaska Outdoors is an award winning outdoor adventure Tour Company operating exclusively in Alaska since 2001. We are a small, family owned and operated business managed by an owner operator who has been leading outdoor expeditions since 1988.
Our fully guided, small group camping tours (ONLY 10 max. per trip) travel to Alaska’s National Parks and protected areas and tent camp at beautifully located campgrounds. Each of our tours provides an adventurous outdoor experience with an emphasis on educational, interactive experiences. Throughout, our guests participate in a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, river rafting, sea kayaking, glacier trekking, ice climbing, Mt. biking, flight seeing, and more.

Alaska Outdoors is currently hiring lead guides (June-Aug). Our lead guides are responsible for independently leading small group camping tours throughout Alaska. They must provide active leadership to support the company’s mission of excellence. They are responsible for organizing all group logistics including transportation, camp set up/ breakdown, meal preparation, leading hikes, and organizing additional activities for guests with an emphasis on safety and attention to detail.
Alaska Outdoors is currently hiring assistant guides (June-Aug). Our assistant guides participate in all aspects of our program and are an integral part of our team. They divide their time between providing infrastructural support at our basecamp and assisting lead guides on trips. This position is ideal for someone with outdoor education/ trip leading experience, but is relatively new to the industry and/ or does not have Alaska specific experience. Assistant guides with considerable aptitude can sometimes lead trips.

Our interns have the opportunity to gain invaluable experience in the outdoor industry and will have the opportunity to learn about all aspects of the outdoor guiding profession including infrastructure, planning, management, and active participation on trips.

Lead Guide will be responsible for independently leading small groups (up to 10) on multi-day camping trips (7-17 days) throughout South Central and interior Alaska. Alaska experience is required.
We recognize that our guide staff is the most important component of operating successful trips year after year. We screen all potential candidates carefully and are looking for experienced, well-rounded individuals that understand the important role that they play in affecting positive outcomes on organized group trips. The days are long and the work is very gratifying.
Our ideal candidate has the following experience:
- Alaska trip guiding experience
- Experience camping in Alaska
- Clean, or mostly perfect driving record
- Knowledge of Alaskan natural and cultural history and willingness to learn more
- Experience cooking and managing food on multi-day trips
- Current 1st Aid and CPR certification (Wilderness First Aid or higher preferred)
- Outgoing and comfortable entertaining groups and interpreting natural history
- Detail oriented and able to multi-task
- A good time manager, able to keep a schedule
- Comfortable driving a 15 passenger van pulling a cargo trailer (6X9)
- Capable of physical activity and light lifting
- Comfortable working as part of a team
Room and Board
Lead guides can expect to spend most of their time during the summer camping in the field while leading trips.
Assistant guides and interns will share their time between the field and base camp. While in the field, staff camp and prepare meals at established camping areas with our guests.
While not in the field, all staff is welcome to stay at our basecamp in Wasilla, Alaska and there is no charge for this. We will provide a private spot on the property to put a tent with access to our home with kitchen, bath, laundry, and internet. Your commute to work is a 20 second walk. Meals while in the field are all included. At base camp, there is generally some food available, though must be supplemented at your own expense. We will provide regular transportation into town for you to buy food for your time at base camp if you do not have transportation.
Alaska Outdoors itineraries offer terrific exposure to the variety of locations and activities throughout the state that have made Alaska a world class adventure destination. Our guides experience these destinations and activities as part of their job. Compensation is dependent on experience. All staff are well compensated, above industry standards, and receive tips and commissions. Living expenses are nominal.
Getting Here and Getting Around
All staff must arrange their own transportation to/ from Anchorage, Alaska. Alaska Outdoors will provide transportation to and from Anchorage at the beginning and end of the season. Transportation within Alaska during “off” time is not provided. You are encouraged to have your own vehicle though public transportation is available.
In addition to participating on our outstanding trips that travel throughout Alaska, our home base in Wasilla is very conveniently located near excellent outdoor recreational activities. Hiking, mountain biking, glacier trekking, and rafting are all nearby. We are one hour from Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city.
