Welcome to the Acadia Corporation!
The Acadia Corporation is a private company operating under contract
with the National Park Service to provide visitor services for Acadia National Park. We
operate three retail interpretive centers in the park (on the summit of Cadillac Mountain, overlooking the sea at
Thunder Hole, and on the shores of Jordan Pond) and several gift shops
outside the park in the resort
community of Bar Harbor. We also operate the Jordan Pond House, one of the
areas best-known restaurants, serving luncheon, afternoon tea and dinner. Our primary
mission is to provide a high level of service to the visitors of Acadia National Park and
its surrounding residents.
Basic Employment Requirements
During our operating season, which runs from May through October, we hire about 200 people. The work in both the restaurant and the shops can be very fast paced throughout our operating season; from July through Labor Day, the number of visitors and tour groups increases dramatically. Most entry level positions do not require prior experience, but you should be prepared to work in a busy and sometimes hectic work environment! Due to the seasonal nature of our business, you may be asked to perform jobs not specified in your job classification. Some jobs finish at Labor Day, but we need many people who can work August, September and October. August Help ... We hire a few people to work just the month of August, our busiest time of the year. These positions require someone flexible who can fill in wherever needed. Fall Help ... Autumn is one of our most beautiful seasons. We often need employees to work 6 to 8 weeks in September and October. |

A Willingness to Serve Our Visitors
We are committed to providing excellent service to our guests. All our jobs involve visitor service whether behind the scenes or directly serving the visitor. Our employees must be friendly, neat, and take pride in serving our visitors. A positive attitude is essential.

Availability
Your dates of availability affect your chances of employment. In general, the later you can stay, the better your chances will be for receiving an offer of employment. Be realistic and specific about the exact dates you will be available, as these dates will become part of your employment agreement. |
Appearance and Conduct
While standards may vary somewhat for various departments, it is expected that all Acadia Corporation employees be neat and appropriately attired. Restaurant employees involved in food preparation will be required to conform to all applicable health and sanitation regulations. Specific dress code information will be included with your employment agreement. As a federal contractor, the Acadia Corporation is bound by statutes of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988 which requires us to establish and maintain a drug-free workplace. Applicants and employees should be prepared to submit to pre-employment, random and for-cause drug tests. |
Hours and Compensation
Our regular work week is 36-48 hours, 5-6 days per week. Expect to work weekends and holidays. (Please note that it is very difficult to schedule extended time off.) All hourly employees are paid time and one-half over 40 hours. All employees are required to sign an employment agreement with an agreed starting and completion date. A bonus (wait staff excluded) will be paid if the agreement is completed in a satisfactory manner. |
Verification of Employment Eligibility
All applicants are reminded that the FEDERAL IMMIGRATION LAW requires employees to prove their identity and eligibility to work in the U.S. This is mandatory and must be done within 3 days of employment. You must provide a U.S. passport, or a driver’s license AND social security card or birth certificate, OR present other documents authorized by law.
NOTE TO FOREIGN APPLICANTS: You need a valid work visa to work in the U.S. and you must be able to acquire the visa without our help. If your school cannot assist you, summer work/travel programs like Interexchange or CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange) may be able to help.

Housing
We operate a rustic 60-bed dormitory next door to the Jordan Pond House, about 8 miles from the town of Bar Harbor. Residents should feel comfortable living in a secluded national park environment. Dorm space is very cramped when the dorm is full during July and August. The rooms are arranged in 8-person pods, consisting of two 4-person bunk rooms with a very small common sitting room between them. Storage and living space are very limited. The dorm housing charge is $115/week per person, which includes meals prepared by the dorm cook. Kitchen facilities are not available for dorm residents. We also operate apartment-style housing in Bar Harbor and Seal Harbor, which are shared by 4-5 employees per apartment (2 persons per room). Apartment rates are $110/week per person and include complete kitchen facilities. All Acadia Corporation housing is supervised. All housing residents are required to sign a housing agreement including the length of stay and agreeing to all housing rules. The first week's rent is due in advance for all locations. You must be at least 18 years of age to live in Company housing. Unfortunately, we do not offer RV spaces.
All company housing is designated as non-smoking. Those who wish to live in company housing must sign an agreement indicating their willingness to comply. Violators of the housing smoking policy may be subject to immediate eviction from company housing.
Limited housing is available on Mt. Desert Island. It tends to be difficult to find and quite expensive, and should be arranged as early as possible. Should you desire your own accommodations, we can provide only limited assistance.

Living in Our Area
Bar Harbor is a busy resort community of 5,000 people with a number of restaurants and shops. Outdoor activities abound. Hiking, biking, canoeing, swimming, fishing, and sailing are just a few of the pursuits which visitors come to Acadia to enjoy. There are many cultural activities in the area, including music festivals, theatrical performances and movies. However, if you come from a major urban area or a large college campus, please bear in mind that the number of sporting events, concerts, and similar activities is very limited in our local area - these activities are generally several hours away.
The employees who are happiest here are those who enjoy outdoor activities more than nightlife. |
SPECIAL CONSIDERATION WILL BE GIVEN
TO THOSE WHO CAN STAY THROUGH OCTOBER
Once an application makes it through the initial screening process we rely on phone interviews to give us additional insight before making and employment offer. We try to have many of our employment decisions completed by April. You will be notified by mail on the status of your application - please do not call. |
